WHAT AN INSULT!

ZECHARIAH 11:12

“And I said to them, ‘If it is good in your sight, give me my wages; but if not, never mind!’ So they weighed out thirty shekels of silver as my wages.”

Have you ever been truly insulted? It is not a good feeling. It’s embarrassing and humiliating. If it is done in front of others, that insult is magnified. That probably happened to me the last time while I was working with a fellow who disliked me because of my ministry. He called me a rather nasty name right in the middle of a staff meeting.

In today’s verse, we find Zechariah writing about his proposed wages from those he asked it – thirty shekels of silver. What you may not know is the standard price for a good servant was twice that. This price of thirty was what was paid for a servant that had been gored by an ox (see Exodus 21:32) and was therefore damaged goods. But you must remember that Zechariah was acting on behalf of Jehovah. The people were spurning God, not just Zechariah.

APPLICATION

Before Christ, we were all guilty of spurning God. We figuratively spit in His face and refused the gift He offered us in His Son, Jesus Christ. But after we become believers, we see the value of the gift. We offer all we have to be one with Him. I am reminded of Matthew 13:45-46. “45 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, 46 and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold everything that he had and bought it.’”

What price can you place on your gift of salvation? If we don’t offer Him everything, we are insulting the God of creation. We are saying we don’t value His gift to us. He laid down His life in the form of Jesus. He shed divine blood for us. He suffered and bled for all mankind. Why would we not give Him everything?

I can’t think of a single thing right now in my life that I place above that. I couldn’t have always said that. In the past I took my salvation for granted. I made it look cheap. Not now! I see its value in my life. Can you say the same? Is it worth everything to you? Lay it all down at His feet and watch what He does with it. I won’t spoil the surprise!

O Lord, my God, You are so good to me. I praise You for paying the ultimate price for my salvation.

FORGIVEN

ZECHARIAH 10:6

“And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them back, because I have had compassion on them; and they will be as though I had not rejected them, for I am the LORD their God and I will answer them.”

“It’s all good, bro. No sweat!” Have you ever been told that before? You have done something that was not good, but the person who you offended said that to you. They forgave you. They were willing to go on and forget the whole thing. You probably had more regrets about the incident than they did. That’s a pretty good feeling to know you had been forgiven.

The Lord is reminding the people of Israel that He had forgiven them. I just love those words He said here in today’s verse – “they will be as though I had not rejected them.” In other words, He had received them back from their rebellion. They were welcomed back into His eternal grace. Then He gives a promise – “and I will answer them.” Wow! That’s our God.

APPLICATION

I can’t help but think about Psalm 103:12, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” He forgives. He restores. He sets us back into position as His children. Just what does that mean? He treats us as if we had never sinned. He chooses to forget those sins. They are under the blood.

Do you understand that? Christ’s blood, shed for you, has the power to “blind” God from seeing those past sins. Now, He isn’t really blinded, but those sins are placed out of His sight. God does that. Isn’t that amazing. Don’t you wish people could do the same? We can’t forgive anything, can we?

I want to encourage you to forgive. Forgive that neighbor that you allow to get on your last nerve. Forgive that person who cut you off in traffic. Forgive the wayward child who has returned home. And forgive yourself for things you have done (this may be the hardest forgiveness of all). God forgives!

God, my Father, You are a forgiving, gracious God who loves me beyond description. I praise You.

DOUBLE BLESSING

ZECHARIAH 9:12

“Return to the stronghold, you prisoners who have the hope; this very day I am declaring that I will restore double to you.”

Given the chance, I would love to double my money anytime. I would swap $10 for $20 all day long. Wouldn’t you? I have never been given that opportunity though. I have thought of playing the lottery but decided not to. Putting my hopes in a lottery doesn’t make a lot of sense. I will let the Lord double my blessings instead.

I just love this verse today in Zechariah. It reminds me of another book of the Bible. In the book of Job, he is restored double what he had lost AFTER he had gone through the test of suffering. Job 42:10 tells us, “The LORD also restored the fortunes of Job when he prayed for his friends, and the LORD increased double all that Job had.” When you get to heaven, ask Job if his suffering was worth it. I bet I know his answer.

APPLICATION

For us to receive those blessings from God, we must come to Him. Our verse says “return to the stronghold.” What is that? Or better yet, who is that? It is the Lord God Almighty. When we return there, He gives us hope. He promises to bless us abundantly. I recall Jesus saying in John 10:10 “‘The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they would have life, and have it abundantly.’”

Now when the Lord says we will have life abundantly, He means a lot. Our life in Him will be beyond measure. Am I saying we are going to be rich beyond our wildest dreams? Certainly not! Jesus will bless you in ways which you can’t measure by human terms. You can’t put them in a bank. But you’ll know you have the blessings.

Blessings come from the Father through the Son to us, the same path which our salvation comes. That is the greatest blessing of God – salvation. I would not even call this a double blessing. It is beyond description. Let’s just call it what Jesus did – abundant! Have you received it? If not, make today the day that you receive God’s double blessing He has promised.

My cup surely runneth over. I cannot contain all the blessings from You, O Lord.

SET FREE

ZECHARIAH 9:11

“As for you also, because of the blood of My covenant with you, I have set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.”

I have never been in jail or prison. I cannot imagine what it would be like to have my freedom of movement taken away. I cannot imagine being locked in a cell for months or years. I have visited a lot of prisons in my ministry. I have seen the loss of life in the eyes of the inmates. I went to bring hope to them in Christ. Some received – others didn’t. We all have that choice.

The Lord continues His discourse and in today’s verse proclaims freedom for the captives. He says, “I have set your prisoners free.” But notice how that is done. In the phrase right before that He says, “because of the blood of My covenant with you.” Only the blood could set them free. This truth continues to us today.

APPLICATION

How long were you enslaved before you were set free? Well Carl, I was never a slave to anything. I haven’t been put in jail or prison. Oh, that is not true. We are told we are either slaves to sin or slaves to obedience. We have been told that sin enslaves us. We are most definitely slaves to sin before salvation. We are doomed with an eternal sentence with no hope of parole.

But thanks be to God, He sent His Son to break those chains of bondage. Isaiah 61:1 says it most clearly. “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD anointed me to bring good news to the humble; He has sent me to bind up the broken- hearted, to proclaim release to captives and freedom to prisoners;” This has been described as Jesus’ job description.

The chains that once bound me to the yoke of slavery have been snapped by the blood of Christ. The moment I said “yes” to Him, the chains fell off. I have power over sin. Sin does not control me. As long as I continue to abide in Him, His Spirit will lead me away from the lure of sin and into His warm embrace. Are you free today? I pray you are. If you aren’t, come to Him today.

The power of Your Son’s blood has set me free, Lord. Thank You for loving me so much.

PROPHECY FULFILLED

ZECHARIAH 9:9

“Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is righteous and endowed with salvation, humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

“I just love it when a plan comes together.” This is the famous quote of John “Hannibal” Smith in the TV series of the 1980s. This action-adventure series came to people’s rescue time and time again. You knew what was going to happen every show. The bad guys would get caught and end up in prison. The good guys (The A-Team) would leave as heroes.

Why is the world would I use that illustration for today’s verse, which just happens to be one of the most famous Messianic prophecies in Scripture? Because God’s plan came together. Here in Zechariah, it is prophesied that the Messiah would ride into Jerusalem on a donkey. Their King, their source of salvation would come in humbly. Even the Talmud (the central text of Rabbinic Judaism) refers to the Messiah riding an ass (donkey).

APPLICATION

Hallelujahs rang out in Jerusalem when they saw Jesus arrive. Matthew 21:6-7 says, “6 The disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them, 7 and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their cloaks on them; and He sat on the cloaks.” Can you just picture the people? They knew the prophecy of Zechariah. They were ecstatic – for a little while.

They didn’t get the full picture. The donkey represented the Jewish people. The foal represented the Gentiles. Jesus was sending a message that all would receive salvation through Him. He was the source of salvation for all mankind. This was not about an earthly kingdom. This was not about freedom from Rome. This was much bigger than that.

Do you get it? Jesus arrived humbly as THE KING of glory. He came to rescue you, me and everyone else from a certain destruction. He didn’t enter Jerusalem with an army. He didn’t need that. His power was enough to vanquish all sin. The cries of “Hallelujah” would quickly change to “Crucify Him.’ What are you shouting today? I hope it is “Hallelujah to the King of kings.”

I shout hallelujah to Your name, O Lord. You are my one and only King Jesus.

PASS RIGHT BY

ZECHARIAH 9:8

“But I will camp around My house because of an army, because of him who passes by and returns; and no oppressor will pass over them anymore, for now I have seen with My eyes.”

When I was a child, I used to play hide and seek with my siblings and neighbors. It was so great when you had a great hiding place where they could not see you. They would walk or run right by you and never see you. You were safe in your hiding place. You could watch them running to and fro, and as long as you were quiet, they would never see you.

The Lord is telling the people that the enemy that is coming on the surrounding lands (it would be Alexander the Great of Persia) would pass right by them. They were safe. All the work they were doing on the temple would stand. This enemy hoard would not descend on Jerusalem. God says, “I will camp around My house.” Nothing was getting past him.

APPLICATION

Isn’t it great to know that He is still defending us today? Psalm 91:4 tells us, “He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” Or how about Psalm 124:1-3? “1 ‘Had it not been the LORD who was on our side,’ let Israel say, 2 ‘Had it not been the LORD who was on our side when people rose up against us, 3 then they would have swallowed us alive, when their anger was kindled against us;’”

Our defender is our God. But you have to be up under His wings. He has to be your refuge. That means you have to recognize and accept Him as Savior and Lord. You can’t JUST believe there is a God. You have to believe in His one and only Son, Jesus Christ. Once you do that (confess and believe), He is forever your defender.

Now, back in that hide and seek game as a child, I was eventually found or had to come out. That wasn’t a permanent hiding place. It was only good for that game. And once that hiding place was found, it was no good anymore. God’s “hiding place” for us is eternal. He will forever defend and protect what is His. And His we are!

Hide me in Your hiding place, O Lord. I know I am secure there.

SMOTHERED AND SCATTERED

ZECHARIAH 8:7

“‘The LORD of armies says this: “Behold, I am going to save My people from the land of the east and from the land of the west;”’”

Call me weird, but when I read this verse, I thought of Waffle House, a restaurant here in the U.S. They are known for their waffles, breakfast menu and especially their short order line cook lingo shared between them and the waitresses or waiters. For instance, I like my hashbrowns scattered (spread on the grill for crispness) and covered (with cheese). I saw the people of Israel scattered and smothered during their exiles. But God gives them hope in today’s verse.

He tells them that He is going to bring them back home. Whether they were scattered in the east or in the west, they will return. These people had suffered under various domains, but now, God is bringing them home. Don’t you know the shouts went up when they heard this from Zechariah. These early remnants, who had returned first, would be joined in the days to come by their brothers and sisters.

APPLICATION

In Matthew 8:11, Jesus says, “‘And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven;’” Jesus foretold the gospel going out to all the world. Gentiles and Jews alike would come into the kingdom of heaven through Him. He was the One who would bring them together.

Do you know any “scattered” or “smothered” souls who need to be brought home to Jesus. I do. I have family members who need to be rescued. I can’t do that. Only Jesus can, but I can do all I can to show them Jesus. I do that in my attitude, my words, my actions and in my lifestyle. I pray that all who see me only see Jesus.

Today, ask the Lord who He wants you to lead to Him. I promise you He has someone in mind. He can use you if you will let Him. Just be Jesus to that person. Share how Jesus has changed your life. Share the joy you have in His Word. Let God do the “unscattering” and the “uncovering” of these individuals. He is able.

I praise You, O Lord, for bringing me home. I praise You for giving me the chance to share that with others.

TOO MARVELOUS

ZECHARIAH 8:6

“‘The LORD of armies says this: “If it is too difficult in the sight of the remnant of this people in those days, will it also be too difficult in My sight?” declares the LORD of armies.’”

What determines if something is marvelous? The Webster definition of “marvelous” is something causing great wonder; something extraordinary. Wow! Think about the things you have seen or heard about that fits into that category. I was eight-years-old when we landed men on the moon. That was definitely something that caused great wonder. It was extraordinary.

Why am I talking marvelous things. Do you see that word in our verse today? Well, it’s there. The Hebrew word translated as “difficult” in the New American Standard Bible (which is what I use) is also translated “marvelous” in other translations. In Jeremiah 32:27 we read, “‘Behold, I [am] YHWH, God of all flesh: is anything too wonderful (wonderful) for Me?’” (Literal Standard Version) The things God does that may seem difficult make them marvelous.

APPLICATION

Mark 10:27 is another great passage about the marvelous things God does. “Looking at them, Jesus said, ‘With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.’” Don’t every doubt God’s ability to make something happen. After all, He did create everything. Why wouldn’t He have the power to affect whatever He chooses to affect?

The most marvelous thing I can think of, though, is salvation. That same God, who created all things, sent His own Son (the God-Man) into this sin-filled world to pay the ultimate price for all mankind. That blows my mind. Christianity is the only religion where the object of worship died for the worshipper. Isn’t that extraordinary? Doesn’t that cause great wonder?

Stop for a minute today and give God praise for this marvelous, this “difficult” thing He has done. I am reminded of that hymn, “I Stand Amazed in the Presence.” I love the chorus that goes, “How marvelous! How wonderful! And my song shall ever be:
How marvelous! How wonderful! Is my Savior’s love for me!”

Thank You, Lord, for doing the difficult and marvelous things. You are God and there is no other.

SLOW! CHILDREN AT PLAY!

ZECHARIAH 8:5

“‘“And the public squares of the city will be filled with boys `and girls playing in its squares.”’”

Throughout the streets of neighborhoods in the U.S., you will often see a street sign that reads, “Slow Children at play.” It is intended to make the driver slow down and watch for children playing near or even in the street. The last thing you want to see happen is a child hit by a car as they were playing. I want to encourage you to pray each time you see that sign and thank God for playing children.

God continues His promises to Jerusalem in verse 5. Now, He is telling them that their children will also prosper. They will once again play in the streets. The sound of children playing will fill the public squares of Jerusalem. Can’t you just see all the children running and playing in and out of the markets and playing all sorts of tag games or hide and seek? I am sure they had their own games during their time which occupied their imaginations. What a sight!

I love this painting because it shows children playing, but more importantly, it shows our Savior playing with them. I can imagine Him doing that. He said in Matthew 19:14, “But Jesus said, ‘Leave the children alone, and do not forbid them to come to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’” This same story is told in both Mark and Luke. Three different authors recorded this, so children must have been important to Jesus.

How important are they to you? Does the sound of children playing thrill your heart? It does mine. I have a five-year-old granddaughter, and I love to hear her laugh and play when she visits us. She is such a rascal. I pray for her salvation every day. I want her to one day “play” with Jesus in eternity. That’s my ultimate prayer for her.

Do you have children or grandchildren whom have not come to a saving knowledge of Jesus? As much as you may enjoy the sound of them playing, how much better would it be to hear them praying. Notice that – just one letter changed – “l” to “r.” But what a difference that one letter makes. Pray for the children. Maybe we need a sign that says, “Slow, Children Praying.”

O Lord, my God, would You save the children. Use us to share the good news of Jesus to them.

GROWING OLD WITH GOD

ZECHARIAH 8:4

“‘The LORD of armies says this: “Old men and old women will again sit in the public squares of Jerusalem, each person with his staff in his hand because of age.”’”

My late brother-in-law, Wayne Barber, used to say, “Growing old ain’t for sissies.” Well, that’s the God’s honest truth, lol. Some people say waking up with pain is just a reminder you’re still alive, lol. I am only in my early 60’s, but I have survived two stem cell transplants and am always at risk for a third flare up of my disease. Struggling with health issues will make you feel old. But I know as long as I live each day for the Lord, He will sustain me.

Today’s verse is the third of ten “thus saith the Lord” type sayings. God is delivering these ten sayings emphatically through Zechariah. Today’s is such a blessing. He is telling the people that they will grow old in Jerusalem once again. They won’t die at an early age due to war. They won’t die in a foreign land. They will grow old at home leaning on their staffs. What a promise to a people who are in desperate need of one.

APPLICATION

How old are you? I know you are not supposed to ask a woman that question, right? But I am not talking about chronological age. I am referring to your spiritual age. How old are you in Christ? I was saved at 16, so I’m @47 years old spiritually. But even that does not say how spiritually mature I am. I know a lot of baby Christians who were saved decades ago. Your spiritual age has more to do with maturity than how long you’ve been saved.

In 1 Corinthians 3:1-3, Paul scolds the Corinthian church for not growing up. Listen to his words and examine yourself with his words. “1 And I, brothers and sisters, could not speak to you as spiritual people, but only as fleshly, as to infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to consume it. But even now you are not yet able, 3 for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like ordinary people?”

I want to grow old in Christ, but more importantly, I want to mature in Christ. I want to grow wiser in His Word. I want to know others can come to me for godly advice. The only thing I want to lean on is His Word and His Truth. Everything else will just crumble beneath my hands. So, I ask you again, how old are you?

When we walk with the Lord in the light of his word, what a glory He sheds on our way! While we do His good will, He abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey.
