GETTING SET STRAIGHT

ROMANS 11:4

“But what is the divine response to him? ‘I HAVE KEPT for Myself SEVEN THOUSAND MEN WHO HAVE NOT BOWED THE KNEE TO BAAL.’”

There is nothing quite as humbling than to be set straight by someone for something you have done or said in error. I can’t say that has ever happened to me (lol), but it could. Seriously, I have had that humbling experience before. I did not enjoy it while it was happening, but afterwards I learned to appreciate it. I have erroneously judged someone in the past, only to learn that I was wrong. I have shared something that I later found out was false information. Humility is good for us from time to time. I am definitely a better person because of those experiences.

Elijah got taken to the woodshed, or so it seems. In yesterday’s verse we saw where he was bemoaning the fact that he was all alone as a servant to God. He’s hiding in that cave, and God comes looking for him. Of course, God knew where he was the whole time, didn’t he? He could have stopped him, but He let him stew for a bit. He even listened to Elijah’s bellyaching. Then God speaks.

APPLICATION

Paul continues the story from 1 Kings 19. He doesn’t tell the whole story of God speaking through the “gentle blowing.” Let’s just say when Elijah heard that, he knew it was the Lord speaking. Let’s give Elijah credit. When God confronted him and pointed out his wrongful thinking, he responded to God’s direction and did what the Lord said. He immediately found Elisha as God said he would. God put someone is his life to mentor and prepare to succeed him. What a renewed purpose!

The Greek word used by Paul which is translated “divine response” is chrématismos. It is only used here in the New Testament. The Topical Lexicon says chrématismos “designates a decisive utterance from God—a communicated response that settles a question, corrects misperception, or charts a course for His people. It is not ordinary counsel but a word issued with divine authority that obligates the hearer to trust and obey.”

Have you received one of those? I have. I know God led me to the ministry I am now a part of, Every Man A Warrior. He has given me a desire to disciple men and lead them to become disciple makers for their families, their churches and their communities. Nothing gives me as much joy as seeing a man “get it.” I wonder how Elijah felt after his “divine response” from God. Being a prophet of the Lord, I am sure he felt a resurgence in his spirit. Don’t you want that same kind of resurgence in your spirit? Listen closely. He’s speaking! Don’t look for the great wind or earthquake or fire. Listen for the small gentle wind of God speaking truth to you.

I am listening, O Lord. Speak!

JUST LISTEN

ROMANS 10:18

“But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? On the contrary: ‘THEIR VOICE HAS GONE OUT INTO ALL THE EARTH, AND THEIR WORDS TO THE ENDS OF THE WORLD.’”

As I am getting older, the one thing that irritates me the most is the loss of hearing. I have lost some of my hearing in my left ear and have tinnitus in both ears. Just plain irritating. However, it does give me a good excuse sometimes when I don’t want to hear something my wife is telling me, lol. Just kidding. But there are times when she is trying to tell me something, and I just don’t hear her. My lack of hearing does not negate the words she is saying. She has still given me a message. I just didn’t respond to it.

Paul continues his line of thinking in today’s verse in regard to the message of God being proclaimed to everyone. He quotes from Psalm 19:4 which says, “Their line has gone out into all the earth, And their words to the end of the world. In them He has placed a tent for the sun,” Albert Barnes says this about the Psalmist. “The psalmist employs them to show that the works of God, the heavens and the earth, proclaim his existence everywhere.” There is just no argument about the fact that God will judge everyone who does not respond to His message of salvation, no matter how He delivered it.

APPLICATION

In Acts 26:26 Paul confronts King Agrippa with the facts that he has heard the message. “‘For the king knows about these matters, and I also speak to him with confidence, since I am persuaded that none of these things escape his notice; for this has not been done in a corner.’” Pretty bold move, huh? Paul confronts the person who holds his fate in his hands. Could we be as bold in presenting the message to others?

In Paul’s letter to the Colossians, he states the fact of the message being voiced to all. In 1:23 Paul writes, “if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.” The gospel message has been “proclaimed in all creation under heaven.” Wow!

The word used by Paul for “voice” is phthoggos which is only used here and in 1 Corinthians 14:7. It has the idea of a musical note by voice or instrument. This note is unique and is recognizable. God’s “note” of the Gospel message is unique and recognizable by all. There is no excuse for not responding. Let us be God’s musical instruments strumming the chords of the Gospel to all who will listen.

Thank You, Lord, for sending Your message to mankind to enable them to respond to Your gift of salvation through Jesus.

NO VOLUME

NAHUM 2:13

“‘Behold, I am against you,’ declares the LORD of armies. ‘I will burn up her chariots in smoke, and a sword will devour your young lions; I will eliminate your prey from the land, and no longer will the voice of your messengers be heard.’”

I have a problem with my truck radio. The little cover for the volume knob is loose, so I have to squeeze the knob to adjust the volume. That’s not a problem if I am sitting still in my truck. But trying to do that while driving is a little difficult. A radio with no or low volume isn’t worth much, is it?

The Lord is telling Nineveh that they will no longer hear the messages from their messengers. Why? Because the messengers, along with the rest of the Ninevites, have been eliminated. They can listen all the want, but they will not hear a thing. No message – no signal – no word!

APPLICATION

There is nothing worse than not hearing God’s voice. So many people go through life not hearing it, though. They do not even realize they can. They think that if they just do all the expected things in church, they are doing okay. Oh, listen to me, brothers and sisters. If you are not hearing God’s voice, you are missing out.

What do you mean, Carl? How can I hear God’s voice? I am glad you asked. Through a disciplined prayer life and Quiet Time, God will speak to you. How do I know that? Because I have heard it myself and dozens of others tell me the same thing. When we get alone with God and truly concentrate on His Word and talk with Him, He speaks.

The Holy Spirit, who lives within you, will speak for Him. It won’t be a fuzzy connection, like you get sometimes on your radio. It will be crystal clear. God is not trying to make you guess if it is Him or not. He will speak to you so that you know it is Him. Do you want that? Then get alone with Him today and ask Him to speak.

Lord, speak to me. I want to hear Your voice.
