ONE VOICE

ROMANS 15:6

“so that with one purpose and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

What kind of car is mentioned in the Bible? A Honda. It says they were all in “one accord.” Get it? Accord, like Honda Accord. I know, not very funny. What do you expect from a 65 year old missionary? We can wear out a good joke.

Why in the world did mention that? Because in today’s verse, Paul uses a word translated as “one purpose” which can also be translated as “one accord.” The Greek literally means “same passion.” Now, that is not so easy to do in most churches. People have their own opinions about how things should run. Paul also said we should be in “one voice.” That’s the point I want to concentrate on today.

APPLICATION

In Matthew 15:18 Jesus tells us, “‘But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and those things defile the person.’” The word “mouth” there is the same word used for “voice” in our verse today. Getting people in the body of Christ to speak with one voice is next to impossible. I have seen the biggest fights happen in churches over the color of the carpet or the songs that the choir should sing. Our mouth, our voice has a way of revealing what is really in the heart.

Barnes says it well, “That they might join without contention and unkind feeling, in the worship of God. Divisions, strife, and contention in the church prevent union in worship. Though the ‘body’ may be there, and the church ‘professedly’ engaged in public worship, yet it is a ‘divided’ service; and the prayers of strife and contention are not heard;” How true? You may have seen this yourself. You may have even been guilty of such “double talk” that caused division. Lord, forgive us if we ever allow our mouth to do that. Amen?

Paul wraps up this verse showing why it is important to have one purpose and one voice. He says so that, “you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” That is our reason for unity. We should always be about glorifying the Father, making Him known. I think Peter says it well in 1 Peter 4:11. “Whoever speaks is to do so as one who is speaking actual words of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” Can I get an amen? Are your words and actions giving glory to God? That is the question.

Father, I desire to glorify Your name about all. Help me guard my tongue so as to not do anything to cause disunity.

PREACHING PEACE

EPHESIANS 2:17

“And He came and preached peace to you who were far away, and peace to those who were near;”

Have you ever played the part of a peacemaker? It can be a very dangerous job. I remember one time sitting in on a mediation between a husband and a wife. I was there to simply be a support to one of them. The mediator remained so calm. Even though the words got heated and threats were even made, that mediator kept bringing them back to a peaceful resolution. Unfortunately, all their efforts failed, and the couple still divorced.

In today’s verse, Paul points us back to a passage in Isaiah 57:19 which says, “‘Creating the praise of the lips. Peace, peace to him who is far away and to him who is near,’ says the LORD, ‘and I will heal him.’” In the Bible I use; this verse is marked as the key verse of chapter 2. Why? Because this was Christ’s message before and after the resurrection. In John 14:27, while speaking about the coming Holy Spirit, the Helper, Jesus said, “‘Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor fearful.’” What a promise!

APPLICATION

What do we do with this message? We rest in Him. After the resurrection Christ appeared to the disciples. We see this in Luke 24:36. “Now while they were telling these things, Jesus Himself suddenly stood in their midst and said to them, ‘Peace be to you.’” Christ was not going to leave them in fear. Neither does He leave us in a place where we should be fearful. His peace still reigns today.

Over in John 20:19 and 21 we have John’s account of His post resurrection appearance. “19 Now when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were together due to fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and said to them, ‘Peace be to you.’ 21 So Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be to you; just as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.’” Can you just picture that scene? Christ is with you today.

Let me encourage you today to rest in His peace. He has sent His Comforter, the Holy Spirit, to live in us. As a believer, you can rest in His perfect peace. Why? Because the Father has sent Jesus who has sent the Holy Spirit. Be at peace, beloved.

I’ve got peace like a river. I’ve got peace like a river. I’ve got peace like a river in my soul.

ISOLATE

GALATIANS 4:17

“They eagerly seek you, not in a commendable way, but they want to shut you out so that you will seek them.” 

Some people, in an effort to control you, will try to isolate you and shut you off from your friends and family. They will appear to have such compassion and care for you, but it is all part of their plans to have you to themselves. They will fill your mind with all kinds of platitudes. You will think they are your best friend. They can be very convincing.

In today’s verse, Paul is referring back to the people who were trying to put the Galatians back under the law. One term used to describe them is “Judaizers.” These people “eagerly” sought the Galatians. They wanted to “shut…out” the Galatians, isolate them so they could control them. They knew Paul stood in their way, so they were always trying to stir up discord about Paul and drive him out of town. Paul is warning the Galatians here about them.

APPLICATION

How does this verse apply to us today? Well, there are still a type of Judaizers among us. There are people who want to control how and what we think. There are plenty of modern day legalizers who want to force you to obey laws and commands which we have been freed from. Romans 8:1-2 says it clearly. “1 Therefore there is now no condemnation at all for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.” 

When we learn to live in freedom, without any guilt from what others are saying we should and shouldn’t do, then we will experience true freedom in Christ. Later in this letter to the Galatians, Paul says this, “It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1) “A yoke of slavery”! Who wants that? I sure don’t.

So, don’t let others tell you what you must do or not do in Christ. Go to the Word. It will instruct. Sure, we need good counsel and good teaching. But ultimately, you must discover your freedom in Jesus. Don’t get isolated by any one person or group. We need fellowship with other believers. Remember that Christ has set you free through His blood.

O Father, I thank You that I do not have to conform to a list of rules to show my love for You.

JUST WHO ARE YOU

GALATIANS 3:28

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

There is a lot of confusion about people today. People are choosing to identify as all kinds of other people or things. I heard recently about an elementary age child who thinks they are a cat. So, the school has to supply him with a litter box. I am not kidding. Way too confusing for me.

In today’s verse, Paul simplifies things. He says, “you are all one in Christ Jesus.” No longer do they have to think like a Jew or Greek. Whether you are slave or master doesn’t matter. The societal restraints against the sexes also fade away. He was making sure they knew that we are all together now in Jesus.

APPLICATION

How do you identify? Well, I’m Baptist so I can’t associate with those Catholics. Or We Methodists cannot go to that service because it’s being led by that Lutheran guy. We still wear our labels. No one is greater than the other in Christ. We are equal. Give each other room to grow.

I believe Paul says it best in Ephesians 4:4-6. “4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you also were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.” We are one. We are united in Christ. We no longer need to be separated into classes or groups.

So, why do we have all these Christian denominations? I get asked that sometime by non-believers. They wonder why we can’t all get along. Good question. But as long as we are here on this earth, we are going to have divisions. Let’s strive to unite. Let’s strive to present a united front against the evil one. We are one!

Lord, thank You for showing me who I am. I know I am in You and You are in me.

A DIVISION

ZECHARIAH 11:14

“Then I cut in pieces my second staff Union, to break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.”

I don’t like division in the family. When I am at odds with my sweet wife, normally over something I have done, I feel awful. I want to make things right. I want union. I want harmony. Sometimes, however, division cannot be stopped. Things happen to divide you. It’s out of your control. Then what do you do?

Judah and Israel had been drawn together because of the temple and Jerusalem. However, with the destruction of the temple and their city, the tribes were dispersed by the enemy. They were separated from each other and lost that bond. This is what Zechariah is referring to in his prophecy in verse 14. The day was coming when this would be fulfilled.

APPLICATION

How we handle conflict and division says a lot about our walk with Jesus. Are we the instigator or the cause of the division? We know that is sin and must be confessed. Is someone else the reason the division exists? How can you point them to the answer? We will never find the answer in ourselves. We have to turn to the Word.

Look at what Paul says in Ephesians 4:1-3, especially verse 3. “1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2  with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 being diligent to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

Look closely at Paul’s words there. We have to walk worthy, in humility and gentleness, with patience, bear others in love, and work hard to preserve the peace. It all starts with walking worthy. It’s not us doing this. It’s Christ in us. Our flesh only wants what it wants. But the Spirit will move us towards peace, if we submit. Just like Judah and Israel, we are going to face divisions at times that we cannot avoid. How will you respond?

I am thankful, Lord, that I am united with You and am forever joined to Christ.
