SING TO THE LORD

1 Chronicles 25:6-7 “6 All these were under the direction of their father to sing in the house of the Lord, with cymbals, harps and lyres, for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the direction of the king. 7 Their number who were trained in singing to the Lord, with their relatives, all who were skillful, was 288.”

WHAT A HE-MAN

As a singer myself, I noticed these verses today.  Heman had fourteen sons and three daughters.  They had the privilege of being the musicians and singers for the Lord.  Can you imagine?  288 voices and instruments singing and playing for the Lord in worship?  I had the privilege once to direct a choir of over 100 voices.  I cannot imagine one almost 3 times that size.  The sound must have been…well…heavenly.

But what really caught my attention about this chapter is the detail spent in dividing up the labor for the temple.  Everyone had their part.  Heman must have busted his robe with pride seeing his children being used of the Lord in this way.  They all did their job.  They all received their instructions and served, as far as we know, the task they were given.

TEACHING MOMENT

Do you assign your children tasks or chores?  I hope so.  Every child needs to learn to work.  They all need to see their accomplishment, even if it is a small one.  Doing assigned tasks prepares them for the future when they will have a job.  Completing the task is important.  This also can lead them to volunteering or serving in church.

When I see or hear my children serving or helping in their church I am so proud.  I know they are not doing it to please me.  They are doing it to please their heavenly Father.  That pleases me.  I truly believe that began at home as their mom and I taught them to serve the family.

Are you teaching your children this?  Could you, like Heman, beam with pride over your children’s accomplishments.  What has God called you to do today?  Are you doing it?  Are you serving in the area He has gifted you?

The church has many members.  Are you the foot, the hand, the arm, the ear or the eye?  If you aren’t serving, part of the body is missing.  Ask the Lord today how He can use you.

Lord, serving You is a joy and privilege I don’t want to miss.  Please show me how to serve Your church and Your body of believers.  Help me to exercise the gifts You have given me to help others.
