1 Chronicles 19:3 “But the princes of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun, ‘Do you think that David is honoring your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Have not his servants come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?’”
BAD ADVICE
There’s a saying that goes, “You had better look before you leap, still waters run deep.” I bet Hanun wished he had done that. Instead he takes the bad advice of these men and humiliates David’s ambassadors he had sent to mourn the loss of Hanun’s father. Sometimes grief can make us do some stupid things. Let’s blame Hanun’s actions on that.
Regardless of why he did that, Hanun’s misstep cost him his kingdom. In the same way, our missteps can cost us. We need to be very careful of the advice we take. We may make assumptions that are just not true. These assumptions can cost us and others a lot. Our only true source of good advice comes from the Lord through studying His Word and praying.
TEACHING MOMENT
We need to be so guided by the Spirit that when our children come to us for advice (and they will) we can give them God’s advice for their lives. They should not trust their own judgment. Only God can give them the right advice every time. Now He can use people, but they should make sure what they are saying lines up with the Word. Children are so easily led astray by “right sounding” advice.
Your children will not come to you regarding declaring war on someone (at least I hope not, lol). They will, however, will come to you for advice on school, friends, finances and marriage. You must be prepared to show them Whom to turn to for guidance. Share with them your source – The Lord Jesus.
What advice are you seeking today? Have you gone to the Word? Have you bowed your knees in humility before a holy God to ask Him? Whatever advice you need today He can give it. And He only gives the RIGHT advice because He is a righteous God.
