A GOOD QUESTION

ZECHARIAH 7:3

“speaking to the priests who belong to the house of the LORD of armies, and to the prophets, saying, ‘Shall I weep in the fifth month and fast, as I have done these many years?’”

Have you ever gone to a pastor or preacher to ask for advice about a spiritual matter? Maybe you have a question about praying or fasting. You could be confused about a certain passage of Scripture and need their insight. Seeking the advice of our spiritual leaders is a good thing. This is what we see in today’s verse.

Sharezer and Regemmelech had come seeking the Lord’s favor and had this question for the priests. This may sound like a strange question, but you have to know what was going on. During the fifth month, the people fasted and prayed in remembrance of the destruction of the temple by the Babylonians. But now that the temple was being rebuilt, these two men were asking if they should continue that or pray with joy. In other words, do we keep doing this or not?

APPLICATION

Malachi 2:6-7 says, “6 True instruction was in his mouth and injustice was not found on his lips; he walked with Me in peace and justice, and he turned many back from wrongdoing. 7 For the lips of a priest should maintain knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth; for he is the messenger of the LORD of armies.” I just love that passage. I have put it to memory, mainly because my boss told me to, lol.

As a pastor and minister of the Gospel, it is my job to dispense knowledge and wisdom to those who seek it from me. Let me say quickly that I have no knowledge or wisdom outside of the Lord’s. That is why I always point people to His Word. It is the true source of wisdom.

If you haven’t read Psalm 119 lately, take a few minutes and do that. Notice that just about every verse has a reference to God’s Word. It may be called commands, law, precepts, statutes or something else, but all those descriptions are pointing us back to the Word. If you have a question, go to the Word or go to someone who can direct you where to look there. It has the answers.

I praise You for giving us Your Word to guide us and answer all of life’s questions.

SEEKING FAVOR

ZECHARIAH 7:2

“Now the town of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regemmelech and their men to seek the favor of the LORD,”

There have been a few times in my life when I had to go to someone to ask a favor. Maybe it was to ask a work colleague to swap days off with me so I could go to an event. Perhaps it was to ask someone to borrow something. Each time I have done that I have gone with a sense of humility, knowing that I was the one doing the asking. The other person had the power to grant me the favor. It was not up to me.

The phrase “seek the favor” in the Hebrew is literally “pray before.” These two men, Sharezer and Regemmelech, are unknown to us except that they represented the people before the Lord. The people knew that to truly seek God’s favor, they had to come before Him in prayer and humility. The Hebrew word used here can also mean sick or weak. The word picture here is one who comes before someone with no power of their own – humble and lowly.

APPLICATION

There is a perfect picture of how we are to come before the Lord when we pray – humble and lowly. Most of my prayers are accompanied with a certain posture. I bow my head or get on my knees as I pray. Occasionally, I will even lay on the floor. It is not about my body position. It’s about my heart position.

Perhaps the best way to show what I mean is to share the story Jesus told in Luke 18:9-14. “9 Now He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: 10 ‘Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and began praying this in regard to himself: “God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, crooked, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.” 13 But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to raise his eyes toward heaven, but was beating his chest, saying, “God, be merciful to me, the sinner!” 14 I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other one; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.’”

As you pray today, remember Who it is you are approaching. He is the God of the universe, the One Who created all things. He gave His Son to die for you, so that you can spend eternity with Him in glory. He deserves our praise and is welcoming of our prayers. Yes, come before Him with praises and singing, but do that with a humble and contrite heart. He is worthy.

Lord, I approach Your throne with a humble heart, asking You to hear my pleas.

HALFWAY THERE

ZECHARIAH 7:1

“In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, which is Chislev.”

Often when I travel, I will look up the halfway point of the trip. I like to plan where I can stop and lodge for the night or check out any cool landmarks. If the trip is several hours long, this halfway spot will give me a chance to stretch my legs and maybe get something to eat. I also like knowing that I am halfway to my destination.

What you may not can tell from the dates mentioned in verse 1 of chapter 7 is this marked about the halfway point from the beginning of the temple rebuild until it was finished. It had been two years since they started. The temple was taking shape, and the people were probably getting more excited about its completion, which was still two years away. But progress was being made.

APPLICATION

Spiritually speaking, how far along are you in your growth? One tenth? Halfway? Philippians 2:13 says, “for it is God who is at work in you, both to desire and to work for His good pleasure.” How far along we are spiritually has a lot less to do with us than it does with God. As Paul said in that verse in Philippians, “it is God who is at work in you.”

Just like in my physical journeys, I won’t get to my destination unless I continue on my path. Spiritually, I don’t want to stop halfway. I want to go all the way with Jesus. I want Him to work in and through me to make me exactly what He wants me to be. That may require me to change the direction I am going. That’s okay because I want to be on the path the Lord is on.

Let me ask you another question. Where do you WANT to be on your spiritual journey? Have you given that much thought? God has. He wants you right by His side and He leads you each step. He will not force you to take this journey, but He promises to be with you if you do. Come on, let’s get going.

Wherever You lead I’ll go, Wherever You lead I’ll go!

OBEY

ZECHARIAH 6:15

“‘Those who are far away will come and build the temple of the LORD.’ Then you will know that the LORD of armies has sent me to you. And it will take place if you completely obey the LORD your God.”

As a child, I did not always obey my parents. I misbehaved in school. I made some horrible decisions as a teen. I knew what my parents expected of me. They made that perfectly clear. However, my flesh got in the way. I simply chose to disobey. Some of those decisions were costly. Others I got away with (or so it appeared).

What does it mean to completely obey? Zechariah is warning the people that all the promises God has made to them will ONLY come to be if they obey Him fully. God doesn’t allow half-hearted commitments. It’s kind of like being “kind of” pregnant. Not so much. You are or you’re not.

APPLICATION

Obedience is that way. God expects us to obey all the time, not just when we feel like it. It’s interesting that, in the Hebrew, “completely” and “obey” come from the same root word for “hear attentively.” In English it would read, “if you hear hear the Lord your God.” Get the picture? You need to really listen, so you can obey.

What do you need to “hear hear” from the Lord today? I love what Jeremiah said in Jeremiah 7:23. “‘But this is what I commanded them, saying, “Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you shall walk entirely in the way which I command you, so that it may go well for you.”’”

God doesn’t measure out His love based on our level of obedience. Aren’t you glad? But He does desire our obedience. Let’s show the Lord today that we love Him by obeying His Word. Let’s show the world that we are consistent in our obedience to Him. He can use our obedience to draw others to Himself.

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, than to trust and obey.

A MEMORIAL

ZECHARIAH 6:14

“‘Now the crown will become a reminder in the temple of the LORD to Helem, Tobijah, Jedaiah, and Hen the son of Zephaniah.’”

Have you ever put something aside as a reminder? I have. In fact, I could probably still find some of those things if I dug for them. That’s just my point. The things we think are so important at the time are really not. They will not last. We tend to put way too much value on things that are temporal. Instead, we should be laying up treasures in heaven.

The Lord tells Zechariah that this crown upon Joshua’s head will become a memorial, a reminder to the people. Back in verse 10, these individuals named here are first brought to our attention. Most scholars believe Helem and Hen are the same as Heldai in verse 10. The crown stands for God’s rule and reign in their lives as Priest and King. God seems to be saying, “Don’t forget this.”

APPLICATION

What is the key moment in your life when you gave your heart and mind to Christ? When did you finally surrender to His call? Think back to that time when you prayed to receive Christ’s offer of salvation. That is a memorial! That is a marker, a milestone. Mark it! Nail it down! You need to remember that moment.

Well Carl, I just kind of grew into Christ. Well, I have to disagree. Just because you are born in a garden you don’t grow into a turnip, do you? God calls each of us to Himself. I love that ole hymn that says, “Have you heard the Savior calling?” Revelation 3:20 tells us, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.”

There is a moment when you felt that call, when you heard that knock. Ask the Lord to show you when that was, if you are not sure. Why am I stressing this? Because we need those markers in our lives. As we share our story with others those markers give us our talking points. Use them to show others what He has done for you and what He can do for them.

I heard Your call and answered, Lord. Now, use me to glorify You.

WELL GLORY!

ZECHARIAH 6:13

“‘“‘Yes, it is He who will build the temple of the LORD, and He who will bear the majesty and sit and rule on His throne. So He will be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace will be between the two offices.’”’”

I can still hear his booming voice as if it was yesterday. My late brother-in-law, Wayne Barber, would quite often yell, “Well, Glory!” When he entered the church building you could hear him. He couldn’t sneak in anywhere, lol. He wasn’t being obnoxious or trying to call attention to himself. Wayne’s ultimate desire was truly to bring glory to his Lord.

Why am I talking about glory? Because the Hebrew word for “majesty” can be translated “glory.” In fact, this word is often used to describe God’s glory. This Branch (mentioned in yesterday’s verse) will bear God’s glory. How is that possible? Because He is God. Jesus, the Messiah, prophesied here in Zechariah, has built the temple and taken His seat. Glory!

APPLICATION

What has that got to do with us? A lot! We are to bear the glory of Christ. We are to give all the glory to Him. We are all about His glory. The world doesn’t want us to do that. Why? Because it points out their darkness. The world wants us to wallow in the pit with them instead of standing and shouting, “Well Glory!”

Why don’t you do a word study on the word “glory” throughout Scripture? Notice the different ways it is used. For instance, in John 9:24, the religious leaders told the blind man whom Jesus had healed to “give glory to God” because they knew Jesus was indeed a sinner. Not everyone who says they are giving glory to God understands it.

I know I am supposed to give glory in all things. Honestly, that’s hard sometimes. When you don’t get the news you want from the doctor, it’s hard to give God the glory. When you don’t get the promotion you have been praying for, it’s hard. But in all things, we must learn to glorify Him. As we do that, we please the Father and point others to Him.

I will glorify Your holy name, O gracious God. You are worthy of all the glory!

A BRANCH

ZECHARIAH 6:12

“‘Then say to him, “The LORD of armies says this: ‘Behold, there is a Man whose name is Branch, for He will branch out from where He is; and He will build the temple of the LORD.’”’”

When I hear the word “branch” I think of a couple of things – a small stream or creek and a tree limb. Let’s stick with the second idea for today’s verse. Tree limb or branch – can’t you just see that right now? It reaches out to bear fruit or provide shade, depending on the type of tree it is.

But the word used here in Zechariah 6:12 for branch is the Hebrew word tsemach. It means a bud or a sprout. The same word is used in Jeremiah 23:5. “‘Behold, the days are coming,’ declares the LORD, ‘When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch;’” We all know Who that is pointing to, don’t we? Jesus, our Messiah.

APPLICATION

The Hebrew meaning really changes how I look at this verse. Jesus started as a lowly, little sprout – a baby. But He grew into a man – the God Man. He is the one referred to here in verse 12, not Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah, as some think. Sure, Zerubbabel was the one lauded for rebuilding the physical temple in Jerusalem. But it did not last, did it? It was destroyed.

Jesus built the spiritual temple, which can never be destroyed. This Branch of David is the one responsible for the eternal stones that were laid. I love how Peter describes us as part of this structure. 1 Peter 2:5 says, “you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”

Because of my acceptance as Jesus as my Branch, my Savior, My Lord, I have been made a part of the spiritual house. My sacrifices to Him are daily. I offer myself upon the altar daily to be used as He sees fit. A sacrifice’s job is to just lay on the altar, not to give input on how it is used. The High Priest – Jesus – decides that. He is our Branch.

You are my Branch, O God. You delivered me through Your sacrifice.

PRIEST AND KING

ZECHARIAH 6:11

“‘Also take silver and gold, make an ornate crown, and set it on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest.’”

I am neither a Catholic, who are accustomed to a Priest, or living in a monarchy where there is a king (or queen). I live in the U.S. where we elect a President and Vice President every four years. We have never seen our President as king or priest. To even suggest such a thing would be ridiculous, whatever political party is in power.

So, when we see this act performed in verse 11, it can be kind of confusing. The crowing of Joshua, the high priest, was meant to show that he would serve as both priest and king. Why do I say that? Because this vision was a prophecy of the Messiah. We know Jesus is our High Priest and our King. Joshua was symbolizing their future Messiah, the one who had all power.

APPLICATION

I need to ask you if you have accepted Jesus as your High Priest and King. I love the book of Hebrews. In it, we see Jesus in those roles, especially as High Priest. Hebrews 4:14-16 beautifully describes this. “14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let’s hold firmly to our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things just as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let’s approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need.”

The picture here of Jesus as our High Priest sitting on His throne should encourage us in our daily walk. He is not idly sitting by, just watching us mess up and then extending mercy and grace. No! He is walking right beside us through His Holy Spirit, and He is interceding on our behalf.

That’s what a High Priest does – he intercedes for the people for their sins. In our case, Jesus is the supreme ruler of the universe since He is part of the Godhead. He rules and reigns perfectly. He did not sin and cannot sin. We can always trust His will to be in our favor – ALWAYS.

I worship You, my High Priest and King. I lay any crowns I will receive at Your feet.

LOOK AT WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE

ZECHARIAH 6:10

“‘Take an offering from the exiles, from Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah; and you shall go the same day and enter the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah, where they have arrived from Babylon.’”

Too often we overlook the work of the Lord in our lives. We either don’t think He is working, or we think we have somehow accomplished this ourselves. How foolish! I am guilty of this. I know you are shocked, right? I want the credit, or I want to complain. I needed to be reminded of the Lord’s faithfulness today in this verse.

Take a look at the names mentioned in today’s verse. Heldai means “the Lord’s world.” Tobijah means “the Lord is my good.” Jedaiah means “God knows.” Josiah means “the Lord supports.” And Zephaniah means “the Lord hides.” Aren’t those great reminders that the Lord is active and working? These instructions the Lord gives Zechariah all relate to these five individuals whose names all point back to God.

APPLICATION

How is the Lord working in your life? Well Carl, I just don’t see the Lord doing anything in my life. Really? Did you wake up this morning? Psalm 3:5 says, “I lie down to sleep, I awake again because the Lord sustains me.” Hmmm. Did you eat yesterday? How about your health? Is it good? All these are signs the Lord is working.

The Lord has a vested interest in our daily lives. He wants us to live in such a way that points back to Him. Why? To glorify His name and bring others into the kingdom. 1 Thessalonians 2:12 tells us this. “…so that you would walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.” Are you doing that? I ask myself that question each day.

Will you live today in a manner that reflects that this is the Lord’s world, that He is your good, that He knows, that He supports, and that He hides His Word in your heart? He wants that for you. I want that for you. Decide right now to do that. That will definitely please the Father.

You are at work in my heart today, O Lord. Help me show others the way.

ANOTHER MESSAGE

ZECHARIAH 6:9

“The word of the LORD also came to me, saying,”

Have you ever been in a text conversation with someone that would not end? Just when you think it’s over, they send another message. Do you answer or not? Do you just send an emoji? You keep asking yourself how you can get out of this conversation without seeming abrupt. Am I right? You’ve been there.

Zechariah may have felt like that at times. It seems he gets through one vision, and before he knows it, God is calling his name again. But that was Zechariah’s calling. He was called to be God’s mouthpiece, to tell forth the words of the Lord. Notice it says, “the word of the Lord also came to me.” These weren’t the words of his neighbors or his friends. These came straight from God.

APPLICATION

We sit back and think that only Pastors hear from God. I know some people in my family who feel that way. I only hear from Him because I am in the ministry. That’s hogwash. We can all hear Him. He is speaking to all of His children. They just aren’t listening.

I shared a quote from A.W. Tozer a while back that said, “People don’t want to hear from God because they don’t want to hear what He has to say.” That’s probably more of a paraphrase than an actual quote, but you get the picture. Do you want to hear Him? Luke 11:27-28 says, “27 While Jesus was saying these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, ‘Blessed is the womb that carried You, and the breasts at which You nursed!’ 28  But He said, ‘On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and follow it.’” Jesus was always pointing us to hear His Father’s voice.

For me, it’s a matter of if I want to hear what He has to say. Honestly, there are days when I want to say, “God, I’m taking a day off and am going to handle things my way.” I don’t do that anymore because I have enough scars from attempting that. The school of hard knocks is real, folks. Just listen and avoid all those bumps and bruises.

You are calling my name again, Lord. My ears are in tune with Your words. Send me Your message.
