HEIRS TO THE PROMISE

GALATIANS 3:29

“And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.”

I am my father’s heir. When he passed away, he left his estate to me and my three siblings. All that my dad possessed was promised to us in his will. My younger sister is the executor of the estate and was responsible for dividing it according to the will. She was to ensure my dad’s “promises” to us were fulfilled. But they were not her promises. They were my dad’s.

In today’s verse, Paul tells us that Abraham was given a promise – that through him all the world would be blessed. Jesus was the fulfillment of that promise. Abraham was not the promise, nor did he control the promise. He was simply an instrument God chose to use to deliver the promise of the Messiah. And now, as believers in Christ, we are heirs to that same promise.

APPLICATION

What do you do with an inheritance? Some people blow it within days or weeks. Others stash it away for a rainy day. The inheritance we receive through Jesus is eternal. You can’t much better than that. In Romans 8:16-17, Paul gives us a great glimpse at this. “16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.”

Colossians 3:24 also gives us a word on this inheritance. “…knowing that it is from the Lord that you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.” So, the question has to be asked. What will you do with your inheritance? You have been promised eternal life through Jesus. Are you going to squirrel that promise away and hide it or are you going to share it?

Take your promise and give it away. When you do you will notice your promise is still there. Sharing the promise of eternal life that you possess does not diminish it one bit. In fact, I think it makes it more. By doing that you are helping to build the kingdom. You are offering that precious promise so that others can join God’s family. Share yours today.

Father, give me opportunities today to share Your promise with someone.

JUST WHO ARE YOU

GALATIANS 3:28

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

There is a lot of confusion about people today. People are choosing to identify as all kinds of other people or things. I heard recently about an elementary age child who thinks they are a cat. So, the school has to supply him with a litter box. I am not kidding. Way too confusing for me.

In today’s verse, Paul simplifies things. He says, “you are all one in Christ Jesus.” No longer do they have to think like a Jew or Greek. Whether you are slave or master doesn’t matter. The societal restraints against the sexes also fade away. He was making sure they knew that we are all together now in Jesus.

APPLICATION

How do you identify? Well, I’m Baptist so I can’t associate with those Catholics. Or We Methodists cannot go to that service because it’s being led by that Lutheran guy. We still wear our labels. No one is greater than the other in Christ. We are equal. Give each other room to grow.

I believe Paul says it best in Ephesians 4:4-6. “4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you also were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.” We are one. We are united in Christ. We no longer need to be separated into classes or groups.

So, why do we have all these Christian denominations? I get asked that sometime by non-believers. They wonder why we can’t all get along. Good question. But as long as we are here on this earth, we are going to have divisions. Let’s strive to unite. Let’s strive to present a united front against the evil one. We are one!

Lord, thank You for showing me who I am. I know I am in You and You are in me.

WEARING JESUS

GALATIANS 3:27

“For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”

Wearing the right clothes for the right occasion is important. For instance, you wouldn’t wear a baseball uniform to play football. You wouldn’t put on our tights and ballerina shoes to run a marathon. We have clothes for all kinds of things, don’t we? Some are expensive and some are just our “knock around” clothes. (I keep telling my wife those old shirts are necessary, lol.)

Paul reminds us that as believers we have another garment. We have been “clothed…with Christ.” What does that mean? We wrap ourselves with His sentiments, His passion, His love. We clothe ourselves with Him so that when people look at us, they see Him, not us. Paul may have been thinking also about the white robes believers often wore at baptism. Wearing those robes must have made those early believers connect to the idea of a totally different life now in Jesus.

APPLICATION

New clothes can make a man. 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us. “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” Over in Colossians 3:9-10, Paul gives us another picture of taking off the old and putting on the new. “9 Do not lie to one another, since you stripped off the old self with its evil practices, 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created it—”

What are you wearing today? Are you wearing Jesus? Or are you still pulling on those old ugly dungarees stained with self? They may feel comfy, but they come with a lot of baggage. Do as Paul said and put on the new self. That new self is only possible as we throw away the old stuff. Get rid of it. I know it’s hard to do but do it. You’ll be glad you did.

Back to today’s verse – “clothe yourselves with Christ.” I worked with a fellow pastor who was described by the middle schoolers he worked with as “Jesus with skin on.” They meant he lived like Jesus. Is that not the goal of each of us? So, change your clothes today if you are not wearing Jesus.

Lord, I am so thankful that I have been given a new garment.

GOD’S KIDS

GALATIANS 3:26

“For you are all sons and daughters of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”

Being a part of a big family can be a good thing. My wife, for instance, is one of eight siblings, two boys and six girls. They are all pretty close and spend a lot time talking through social media or, in the case of my wife and some of her sisters, hours on the phone. I am so thankful we have unlimited minutes now on our cellphones, lol.

But better than our earthly families, we are part of a large, multiracial, multi-continental family. That’s God’s family. Paul reminds the Galatians, who were for the most part a Gentile audience, that they too were part of this family. It wasn’t just a Jewish thing. Their common faith in Jesus as Lord has brought them all into the same family – the family of God.

APPLICATION

Application for this verse is so apparent. We need to do all we can to bring more into the family. John 1:12 tells us, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name,…” And then there is another verse by John in 1 John 3:1. “See how great a love the Father has given us, that we would be called children of God; and in fact we are. For this reason the world does not know us: because it did not know Him.”

I could continue to rattle off dozens of verses on us being the children of God but let me encourage you to do a little digging. Just google “verses about being called children of God.” You will find plenty. As children ourselves, we are called to expand the family. We are called to share the good news of Jesus Christ and invite the world to come in. There is plenty of room in God’s house.

Who in your earthly family right now needs Jesus? Pray daily for them. Share the gospel with them every chance you get. Will they get mad with you? Maybe, but what is worse – them getting made or them going to hell. And above all, live like Jesus. Sometimes words are even necessary in sharing our witness. The love of Jesus in us can draw them to Him. Be His obedient child.

I am so thankful to be in Your family, God. I know You will always be my heavenly Father.

FREE AT LAST

GALATIANS 3:25

“But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.”

As I grew up in Southwest Georgia, I was under the direct care and supervision of Jack and Mack Willis. Yep, those were their names. Jack was a nickname for James and Mack was short for Maxine. As their son, I was expected to obey their rules. I didn’t always like their rules (why couldn’t I have cookies for breakfast?) and didn’t always follow them. I knew they meant good by all the rules, but because they were rules, they were meant to be broken, right? At least I thought so.

I love this short but powerful verse today. It simply says faith trumps law. When the early believers, who were used to following the rules of the Law, came to Christ, they were set free. No more restrictions on food. No more rules about what they could and couldn’t do on the Sabbath. They were free because Jesus had satisfied the Law. Paul had felt that himself and wanted everyone who struggled under the heavy weight of the Law to be set free.

APPLICATION

Let me ask you a question. What is it you feel compelled to do in your effort to please God? Name one thing. Did you know the only thing the Lord requires of you is repentance and acceptance of His free gift? Romans 6:23 says so. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Now, who doesn’t want a free gift?

Stop struggling to try to “do” for Jesus. Just “be.” Be like Him. Be holy as He is holy. Be free to live a life that honors Him. Just be. As a Baptist I can tell you that I tried for years to do things. I felt compelled to grab that celestial golden ring. It can’t be done. When I learned to rest in Him, I started living for Him. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.”

Now, do I do certain things as a believer? Yes, I have my daily Quiet Time. I read the Word. I pray. I give to the Body of Christ. But now I do those things out of love, not out of obligation. There is nothing I can do to gain my salvation. And now that I have it, there is nothing I can do to lose it. I am free at last. Are you?

Our freedom in Christ, O God, gives us the ability to live for You. Thank You.

GUARDIAN

GALATIANS 3:24

“Therefore the Law has become our guardian to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.”

When I worked in the Child Welfare field, I often had dealings with people who served as a Guardian-ad-litem (GAL). That person was someone who watched out for the care of a child who had been placed in state custody. They were appointed by the court to ensure that proper placement occurred and, once it did, that the custodian at that site was meeting the social, spiritual, educational and medical needs of the child. Most, if not all, these GALs I met were special people with good hearts.

Paul describes the Law much like a GAL. Its purpose was to direct and care for the people. Its purpose was to try to guard them against getting hurt by giving them clear directions on how to live. But try as it might, the Law could not save them. It was limited. It was powerless to save. It did, however, point to Christ Who can save us.

APPLICATION

The Greek word for guardian is paidagōgos. It’s only used three times in the New Testament (here, in tomorrow’s verse and in 1 Corinthians 4:15). HELPS Word Studies says it “is used of the role of the Law (OT), especially the necessary “letter” (foundation, technicalities) needed to establish the doctrines of salvation, grace, faith, etc.” A guardian is a good thing, even though many people who have one begin to resent it. They want their freedom. Hmmm, that sounds familiar, doesn’t it.

1 Corinthians 4:15 says, “For if you were to have countless tutors in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel.” What was Paul saying here? Guardians are no guarantee of getting things right. You need someone to truly come alongside you and spend time with you. You need someone to serve as your role model.

In my ministry (Every Man A Warrior), we do just that. We get men to spend time with men and be each other’s allies. We need each other. We need others to serve as our guardians, our role models, our defenders and protectors. All of that is for one purpose – to point each other to Christ. Nothing is more important than that. Can you do that for someone?

Father, help me be a good “guardian” for another brother in Christ to help them in their walk with You.

NO ESCAPE

GALATIANS 3:23

“But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the Law, being confined for the faith that was destined to be revealed.”

Click! Click! That is the sound you hear as you enter the jail. I served as a Chaplain for our County Sheriff Department for a while. Part of my duties was to visit the officers in the jail. You see, my role was not chaplain to the prisoners. My role was to the officers. And even though they were innocent of any crime, they were locked behind those bars every day also. On the other hand, the inmates remained behind. They could not just walk out. They were condemned to serve their sentence.

Paul continues the idea of the Law being restrictive and confining in today’s verse. In fact, he uses two words that point to that. He says “were kept in custody.” That’s the Greek word phrouréō which means “to actively display whatever defensive and offensive means are necessary to guard.” (HELPS Word Studies). The other word Paul uses is sugkleió which means to enclose or shut in. Paul is saying the Law held us captive until Jesus could be revealed.

APPLICATION

Well Carl, I’m not held captive by anything. I am free as a bird. Are you really? If you are in Jesus, you are free (as we discussed over the past few days), but even then, we can put ourselves back up under Law by thinking we have to do certain things to earn “brownie points” for heaven. There is nothing you can do, outside of surrendering to Jesus, that will get you through those pearly gates.

Acts 16:26 is a great picture of our salvation in Christ. Paul and Silas are sitting in prison for preaching about Jesus and then this happens. “and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains were unfastened.” That’s must be how it looks to God when we finally give our lives to Him. Bam! The chains fall off.

In stark contrast to our freedom in Christ, we see Satan, that ‘ole deceiver chained by God. Revelation 20:1-3 give us a great picture of that. “1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he took hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he threw him into the abyss and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time.” Praise be God, Who is the chain breaker and chain maker.

O Father, You have promised freedom for me and imprisonment for the devil. You are the all powerful Judge.

IMPRISONED

GALATIANS 3:22

“But the Scripture has confined everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.”

I have never been in jail or prison. I pray I never have to spend time there. You may have heard the joke that asks you to say the first four words you would say if you woke up in prison with your best friend. Mine would be “I told you no,” or “Don’t do that Bubba.” Anyway, no one wants to be in jail, but before Christ we all are, in a way.

In today’s verse, Paul uses a word translated as “concluded” that could also be translated as “imprisoned.” You see, we are all guilty under the Law, therefore we are all sentenced to an eternal prison, hell. But the last part of his verse gives us our “Get out of jail free card.” When we put our faith in Jesus, we receive all the promises from Him, including freedom from sin. It no longer has power over us. Praise be to God!

APPLICATION

Later in this letter to the Galatians, Paul says, “It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1). Don’t you think this whole idea of freedom in Christ was running through his mind as he penned these words in today’s verse? Paul knew the bondage that came with the demands of the Law. He couldn’t stand the idea of these new Gentile believers being shackled by them.

In John 8 Jesus addresses some Jewish believers. John 8:34-36 is a great discourse. “34 Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, truly I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 Now the slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.’” Can you imagine their relief, knowing they were set free from all the demands of the Law?

We too have been set free. 2 Corinthians 3:17 tell us, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” And where is that Spirit? He dwells in you! Therefore, you are free. You are free to live a life that honors the Lord Jesus. You are free to worship Him in spirit and in truth. You are free. Never put back on the chains of sin.

Thank You, Lord, for setting me free through Jesus. I praise You for the liberation I have in Him.

ONLY IF

GALATIANS 3:21

“Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? Far from it! For if a law had been given that was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law.”

There’s a saying, “Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.” You can get close and still have a point or cause an impact. But in everything else, you need to hit it right on the dot. It does no good to say, “If only I had scored more points” or “If only I had studied more.” Do you get my meaning?

In today’s verse, Paul is saying if only the law had been able to save us. He knew the limitations of the law because he had tried to live by it. He knew from first had experience the frailty of the Law. The Law did point to Christ, but only the ones who placed their faith in Jesus are able to see it.

APPLICATION

Most of us Gentiles have never been burdened in keeping the Law of Moses. We have never thought about eating kosher or following all the restrictions. Only when we come to Christ do we see how the Law points to Him. But we put ourselves under so many other Laws like going to church every time the doors are open or giving our tithe each week. I’ve even been told you can’t fish or hunt on Sunday.

No law is able to redeem us back into the relationship with Jesus that we need. I think of Matthew 11:28-30. “28‘Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30  For My yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light.’” The yoke of Jesus is not burdensome. Why? Because He is yoked along with us. He shows us how to live holy.

So, how will you live today – under Law or under grace? What does living under grace mean to you? You need to live each day as if He is going to appear any moment. Live to please the Master. Live to honor Him in everything you do. Will you do that?

Lord God, You gave us the Law to point toward Jesus. Thank You for His saving grace.

MEDIATOR

GALATIANS 3:20

“Now a mediator is not for one party only; but God is only one.”

I was party to a mediation years ago in which a husband and a wife were going through a divorce. I sat there as a witness for one of the parties, in case I was needed (I wasn’t). It was clear from the very beginning of the proceedings that the mediator was on neither the husband’s nor the wife’s side. They were an impartial party to the conflict. Their job was to settle the dispute amicably. The success of their mission depended on their neutrality.

Today’s verse is the subject of much controversy. There are as many interpretations of this verse as there are interpreters. I cannot begin to settle the dispute in this short devotion. You have to look at the context of the passage. Paul has been discussing the contrast between the Law and grace. Two sides of righteousness are depicted here. I truly believe Paul is saying simply that God is in charge! The word “only” is not in the original Greek. Paul writes “God is one.” He is the one who makes things right. He is the one who declares us righteous! But He is not an impartial mediator. He is on our side!

APPLICATION

Let me say again that this passage is a much debated one. I would encourage you to spend some time reading some of the commentaries on this passage (use Bible Hub or Blue Letter). Bible). But let’s nail down what this means for us today. After all, isn’t that the purpose for reading Scripture?

Deuteronomy 6:4 says, ““Hear, Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!” This is known as the “Shema” or the call to worship for the Jews. Listen up Israel, Jehovah is our God and Jehovah is one! I believe Paul, being a former Pharisee, had this verse on his mind when the Holy Spirit inspired him to write today’s verse. There is no other God. He is the only One.

But lest you believe to believe that is enough, read James 2:19. “You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.” Believing in God is not enough. You have to have faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. That was the problem with the Law. It taught all about God being One, but it did not bring salvation. That is only made available through Jesus.

So, what will you do with this verse today? Remember that God is One, but that One is comprised of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The three make One. Do I understand that? No! But I believe it and have faith in it. Do you?

For I know Whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able…
