SOWED BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

ZECHARIAH 10:9

“When I scatter them among the peoples, they will remember Me in distant countries, and they with their children will live and come back.”

Have you ever watched a farmer sow seed in his fields? It is pretty amazing. A farmer who plants a large field of corn will run his tractor and machinery over that field, having already prepared the field, and will plant the seed. Then he prays for rain. Some farmers are lucky enough to have irrigation to help water the seed. But one thing the farmer does not do – he does not forget about that field he has planted.

I love the imagery God paints through Zechariah in today’s verse. The Hebrew word for “scatter” means to sow, as in sowing seed. God planted His people in other lands, which He had prepared beforehand, but He did not forget about them. He expected a return. It says they remembered Him, “and they with their children” returned. What a promise!

APPLICATION

You may feel like that seed, which is planted, buried in the ground. You may think you have been forgotten about. I promise you something. You haven’t. God does not forget – period. He especially does not forget His children. He may have sown you into a field that is uncomfortable right now. But remember, God prepared that field to receive you. He expects a harvest in your life.

Paul gives us a hint of what God is doing in 2 Corinthians 2.

“7 But we have this treasure in earthen containers, so that the extraordinary greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; 8 we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying around in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.”

Did you catch that last part in verse 10? Relate that to today’s verse. Seed have to die to live. That seed gives up what it is currently in order to produce life and multiply. You are planted in a field by God to die to yourself so that Christ may live in you. Hallelujah! That is shouting ground! Christ lives through my dying. Are you alive in Him?

O Father, even though I don’t especially enjoy the sowing, I know You are planting me right where You want me to grow.

GOT YOUR GOAT

ZECHARIAH 10:3

“My anger is kindled against the shepherds, and I will punish the male goats; for the LORD of armies has visited His flock, the house of Judah, and will make them like His majestic horse in battle.”

Have you ever heard the expression, “Got your goat”? It commonly means to annoy or anger someone. The etymology of the phrase is not certain. Whatever the origin, to get someone’s goat is not a good thing. People who raise goats seem to like them, so it makes sense if you got their goat they would not be very happy.

All through Scripture we find goats being on the wrong side of God’s judgment. Look at this passage in Ezekiel. Ezekiel 34:17 says “As for you, My flock, this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I am going to judge between one sheep and another, between the rams and the male goats.’” Sheep were always the ones that were chosen. Goats were turned out. They were even given the task of carrying away the nation’s sin on the Day of Atonement.

APPLICATION

In Matthew 25:31-32 we read where Jesus said, “31 ‘But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 And all the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, just as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats;’” 

One day Christ will come and judge between the righteous and unrighteous. I had much rather be called a dumb sheep than a smart goat, hadn’t you? He is our Shepherd and cares for us, even when we don’t know any better. I prefer the gentle coaxing of the Shepherd rather than separation that Jesus described.

The Lord told us in today’s verse that He was going to divide between believers and unbelievers, between those who follow Him and those who don’t. We have a choice. We choose who we will relate to and how we respond to them. What are you, goat or sheep? I know what I choose to be.

Lord, I choose the more docile side – sheep.

WANDERING SHEEP

ZECHARIAH 10:2

“For the household idols speak deception, and the diviners see an illusion and tell deceitful dreams; they comfort in vain. Therefore the people wander like sheep, they are wretched because there is no shepherd.”

If you have never seen the picture of the sheep who was lost for six years and grew over sixty pounds of wool, you can click on the link below and see some images (the link is safe). Pretty amazing. This sheep was safe under the care of the shepherd but ran away and had no one to keep him safe. As a result, he grew so much wool that he could barely walk or graze.

The Lord is warning the people of the dangers of idol worship which would cause them to wander from their shepherd. He is that shepherd. He is the one who can guard, guide and graze them. They become wretched when out from under His care, just like the sheep you saw above. That Hebrew word “wretched” can mean “in trouble” or “afflicted.”

APPLICATION

Oh, what a picture this verse paints for us. I am reminded of Isaiah 53:6. “All of us, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the wrongdoing of us all to fall on Him.” That’s us! We wander and then can’t figure out how things got so bad. If we had just stayed put.

Why do you wander? We believe the lies of the evil one. He tells us we deserve a little “me time,” that we don’t have to constantly submit to God. The devil whispers little ideas in our ears. Our flesh is ready to hear it, UNLESS we are surrendered to God’s will.

I know I have to constantly surrender my will to His. I could slip away so fast. I could be just like that overweight, fluffed up sheep. I may think I want my own way, but I soon yearn for the protection and intimacy of my Lord. Where are you today?

Father, keep me close and guarded. I desire that from You.

LOVELINESS AND BEAUTY

ZECHARIAH 9:17

“For how great will their loveliness and beauty be! Grain will make the young men flourish, and new wine, the virgins.”

I am sure you have all seen a beauty contest. Contestants are judged on their beauty and poise. Sometimes they are even judged on a talent. When I was in high school, my girlfriend was crowned Miss Pelham in our hometown contest. Needless to say, my chest was a little puffed up.

God is not talking about worldly beauty and loveliness. The Hebrew words are worthy of a look. “Loveliness” means goodness, gladness, welfare. It’s a word that has meaning that is directed toward others. “Beauty” is just that – beauty. Was God saying the Israelites are all beautiful physically? Of course not. Their beauty was all based on their relationship to Him. What a great expression towards His people!

APPLICATION

How lovely and beautiful are you? Well Carl, I have been told I am a really nice person. That is not what God means by this. Our loveliness and our beauty cannot be tied to worldly opinions. Ours is tied directly to how we live out the Word of God. Philippians 4:8 tells us, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

This kind of thinking will turn us into lovely and beautiful believers. It will come out in the way we treat others. It will be exposed to strangers. We will not be able to keep Jesus from spilling out on others. They will see His loveliness and His beauty in us. Remember, it is NOT about you. It’s all about Him.

I will never be called beautiful based on my physical features. As I age, I see more and more physical imperfections. But it is my prayer that people see my loveliness and my beauty that is based on Jesus. When He shines forth, that is all that matters. Be lovely and be beautiful for Jesus!

I praise You, O God, for making me more and more like You so Your loveliness and Your beauty can be seen.

PRECIOUS STONES

ZECHARIAH 9:16

“And the LORD their God will save them on that day as the flock of His people; for they are like the precious stones of a crown, sparkling on His land.”

One of my favorite verses about children is found in Proverbs 24:3-4. “By wisdom a house is built and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.” Isn’t that beautiful? Those rare and beautiful treasures are our children. If you have a child or children, I pray you see them that way.

The Lord is reassuring the people once again just how special they are to Him. He calls them His people who sparkle on His land. God is painting a picture for them. They are like a crown encrusted with precious stones. They sparkle and shine His glory and His brilliance. What a wonderful description!

APPLICATION

You are also seen by God in the same way once you become a believer in Christ. In the Word, God paints us in all kinds of ways. He calls us a royal priesthood and His own possession in 1 Peter 2:9. We are His children, His family, living stones, etc., etc., etc. I could go on and on through Scripture with the descriptors God uses to show how much we mean to Him.

My point is this – don’t let anyone ever tell you that you are of no value. If you are God’s child, you have extreme value. You are joint heirs of the kingdom with Jesus. Wow! You are a rich, rich person in Christ. I saw the other day that someone won the largest lottery ever – over $1.5 billion. But our inheritance in Jesus is so much more.

I am not a rich man, and I never will be (unless that lottery winner wants to give me a million or two, lol). But the Lord has always provided for me and my family. Why? Because I am His precious jewel. He cares for me. I believe He will do what He says He will do. I believe He is able to do the impossible. Do you? He can if you will allow Him into your life.

O God, my salvation and my stronghold, I rest in You knowing that You see me as a precious jewel.

BOW BENDING

ZECHARIAH 9:13

“For I will bend Judah as My bow, I will fill the bow with Ephraim. And I will stir up your sons, Zion, against your sons, Greece; and I will make you like a warrior’s sword.”

In past years, I have attempted some archery hunting. Now, when I say “attempted” I mean I wasn’t successful in my hunt. I do not use a regular bow or combine bow when I hunt. I use a crossbow. Mine requires a “cocking rope” to draw back the bow in order to place the arrow (or bolt which are like small arrows made for crossbows). On one trip, I forgot my cocking rope. Try as I might, I could not draw back the bow without it.

God is saying here that He will be the one to draw back the bow and defend His children. I have mentioned one of my favorite verses is Exodus 14:14, “The Lord will fight for you, while you remain silent.” God is going to “stir up” Zion. He is going to “make you like a warrior’s sword.” In other words, get ready. Tests and battles are coming. But God has their back.

APPLICATION

He will defend us, or He will equip us for battle. He will never send you in a battle that you cannot handle. With God at our side, no one can defeat us. David’s Psalm 18:2 gives us a great picture of that. “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my savior, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

Is that your position with God right now? Is He your stronghold. O dear brother or sister, I pray you are resting in that. I pray that you know God has your back. I pray you know that He is fighting for you daily. Without God’s defense, we would be sitting ducks for the enemy. Most of us couldn’t hold off an infant demon on our own.

If there is one thing I have learned from my study of the Word through Every Man A Warrior, it is that I am living in a spiritual realm that is only visible through spiritual eyes. I now see the enemy at work in places I would have never seen him five years ago. God’s Word has opened my eyes. Be aware of your enemy, beloved. But be more aware of God’s warring angels there to intervene at God’s beckon call.

Father, thank You that You prepare me and accompany me into battle. You are Jehovah Nissi.

PASS RIGHT BY

ZECHARIAH 9:8

“But I will camp around My house because of an army, because of him who passes by and returns; and no oppressor will pass over them anymore, for now I have seen with My eyes.”

When I was a child, I used to play hide and seek with my siblings and neighbors. It was so great when you had a great hiding place where they could not see you. They would walk or run right by you and never see you. You were safe in your hiding place. You could watch them running to and fro, and as long as you were quiet, they would never see you.

The Lord is telling the people that the enemy that is coming on the surrounding lands (it would be Alexander the Great of Persia) would pass right by them. They were safe. All the work they were doing on the temple would stand. This enemy hoard would not descend on Jerusalem. God says, “I will camp around My house.” Nothing was getting past him.

APPLICATION

Isn’t it great to know that He is still defending us today? Psalm 91:4 tells us, “He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” Or how about Psalm 124:1-3? “1 ‘Had it not been the LORD who was on our side,’ let Israel say, 2 ‘Had it not been the LORD who was on our side when people rose up against us, 3 then they would have swallowed us alive, when their anger was kindled against us;’”

Our defender is our God. But you have to be up under His wings. He has to be your refuge. That means you have to recognize and accept Him as Savior and Lord. You can’t JUST believe there is a God. You have to believe in His one and only Son, Jesus Christ. Once you do that (confess and believe), He is forever your defender.

Now, back in that hide and seek game as a child, I was eventually found or had to come out. That wasn’t a permanent hiding place. It was only good for that game. And once that hiding place was found, it was no good anymore. God’s “hiding place” for us is eternal. He will forever defend and protect what is His. And His we are!

Hide me in Your hiding place, O Lord. I know I am secure there.

FORTRESSES DO NOT DEFEND YOU

ZECHARIAH 9:3

“For Tyre built herself a fortress, and piled up silver like dust, and gold like the mud of the streets.”

My house has windows and doors that lock. I have a motion light in the back that will come on if someone approaches my house at night. But all the locks in the world cannot protect me if someone really wanted to get in. You may have heard “locks only work on honest people.”

Tyre built an impressive fortress. Look at how it is described.
“The walls, 150 feet high and of breadth proportionate, compacted of large stones, embedded in gypsum, seemed to defy an enemy who could only approach her by sea. In order to make the wall twice as strong they built a second wall ten cubits broad, leaving a space between of five cubits, which they filled with stones and earth.” But even that could not keep away God’s judgment.

APPLICATION

What have you placed your trust in? Are you trusting those locks on your house to protect you? Are you trusting in guns and ammo? There is only one true source of protection. Psalm 61:3-4 says, “3 For You have been a refuge for me, a tower of strength against the enemy. 4 Let me dwell in Your tent forever; let me take refuge in the shelter of Your wings.”

Isn’t that beautiful? You may never see the stones and gates of God that protect you and your loved ones, but they are there. Then why do I get attacked by the enemy all the time? That’s a very good question. Have you read Job lately? Why did God allow Job to be tested so much? God wants to refine us and make us pure. That requires some fire.

I don’t like the tests and trials that God allows, but I do like the results. Every time God has taken me through a trial, and I have trusted Him, I come out better. I come out hardened for battle. I come out further prepared to take on the challenges of my enemy. Who are you trusting? What are you trusting? I pray you are trusting the One who is trustworthy.

Thank You, Lord, for defending me. I rest in Your strength.

LET US GO WITH YOU

ZECHARIAH 8:23

“‘The LORD of armies says this: “In those days ten people from all the nations will grasp the garment of a Jew, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’”’”

I have seen many a child tug on their mother’s dress or coat as they are left in the church nursery. They cried out to them, “Please, let me go with you.” My own children did that. They did not like the nursery. They wanted to stay with us. Mind you, it wasn’t that they wanted to go to “Big Church” with us. It was more about just being with their parents.

In today’s verse, the last verse of chapter 8, the Lord closes out His blessing statements by saying that the Jews are going to be begged by others to take them along back to Israel. They had heard how God had defeated Israel’s enemies and had brought His people home. They wanted to be a part of that. They wanted whatever the Jewish people had.

APPLICATION

We should spread such a sweet fragrance of Christ wherever we go that those we pass will turn and say, “Boy, I want whatever they have.” Can that be said about you? Do people want to follow you? If you are following Christ, they will. Actually, they will be following Christ in you. There’s a big difference.

Why do I differentiate? Because we can become men followers instead of Christ followers. Christ says, “‘If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.’” Whew! Who wants to do that? Well, I do. I want to follow wherever He goes. Just like the people coming from the other nations to Israel, I want to be where God is doing something.

If no one is following you in your Christian walk, maybe you need to examine your walk. Ouch, Carl, that hurt. Well, I ask myself that question quite often. Does my aroma smell like Jesus? Does my walk imitate His walk? Would people want to follow me if I did this or that? Good questions to ponder, huh?

Lord, allow me to be more and more like You so others can be led to You.

INVITE SOMEONE

ZECHARIAH 8:21

“‘“The inhabitants of one city will go to another, saying, ‘Let’s go at once to plead for the favor of the LORD, and to seek the LORD of armies; I also will go.’”’”

I am planning for a conference in Kenya and Uganda right now and am busy inviting people from all over Africa to attend. It’s going to be a wonderful time of training and encouraging the leaders of our Every Man A Warrior ministry on that continent. I want all who can come to be there. I don’t want them to miss out on this training and fellowship.

The people of the cities were looking at Jerusalem in today’s verse and encouraging each other to go there. They wanted to “plead for the favor of the Lord.” They wanted to be where the Lord was. They could see how Israel was being blessed and were drawn there. I love that last phrase – “I also will go.” In other words, lets’ all go!

APPLICATION

Have you invited anyone lately to be a part of your small group or fellowship? I just finished a small group with four men and am praying about men for a new group in the Fall. I long for that time. I need that fellowship and comradery. But I have learned to pray these men in – not just grab some guys and start a group.

The same thing applies to inviting people to church. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to the right people. Then when He gives you an open door of opportunity, take it. Tell them what these people told each other. Tell them to come and seek God’s favor with you. Paul tells us in Romans 15:7, “Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us, for the glory of God.”

I had the privilege to preach recently in a church of a different denomination than my home church. I was totally welcomed there and felt right at home. The Spirit of Christ welcomes us, not a specific church. Would you allow the Spirit of Christ in you to welcome someone to visit your church or small group this week? Be the hands and feet of Jesus.

I will be obedient to the Spirit as He leads me this week to talk to others about You, Lord.
