2 Kings 8:19 “However, the Lord was not willing to destroy Judah, for the sake of David His servant, since He had promised him to give a lamp to him through his sons always.”
ONLY GOD
There is only one true Promise Keeper – The Lord. Try as we may, we are likely to break a promise to someone along the way. Sometimes we make rash promises that we KNOW we cannot keep. Other times the promises are made with the best of intentions, but things happen that bring change and can cause us to not keep that promise.
God had promised David that a king would always be on the throne from his lineage. He kept that promise and fulfilled it completely by inserting His Son into that very lineage of David. Jesus is the eternal King of Glory and will forever reign on His throne.
TEACHING MOMENT
Children make promises all the time. Have you ever heard your child make a “pinky swear” vow to a friend or sibling? You know when you hear it that there is NO WAY they will ever be able to keep that promise. What a perfect time to step in and teach them about promise keeping.
Making promises is part of life. We promise to love, honor and cherish our spouses. We promise to pay for a car or home when we sign the loan papers. But we must be mindful that only God has the supreme power to keep His promises to us. Remind your children of those. He is the Promise Keeper. Are you a promise keeper?
Are you trustworthy to your family to keep your promises? Or do you make promises all the time knowing you will never keep them? Stop doing that? Emulate our Lord. Be the one known as the promise keeper. People should know they can believe you when you make a promise.
Do you need to fix some broken promises? We hurt our children when we break our promises to them. Don’t make a promise you can’t keep. Even if it means disappointing them now, don’t make it.
