DOING THE RIGHT THING

1 Kings 15:11, 14b “11Asa did what was right in the sight of the Lord, like David his father. 14b …nevertheless the heart of Asa was wholly devoted to the Lord all his days.”

DEVOTION

Asa was the great, great grandson of David.  He was he first king of Judah, since David, who held true to the things of the Lord.  That took courage.  He had to shift the nation in a different direction.  But he did.  He stood for the right things and put away the wrong things.

Why did Asa do that?  Who taught him the way of the Lord?  Perhaps he visited that magnificent temple his great grandfather had built. Perhaps he spent more time reading the law of God.  Perhaps he saw the wickedness of his father and decided to turn course.  We don’t know exactly what caused him to be the loyal king to God.  But he was.

TEACHING MOMENT

It is our responsibility as parents to “set the table” for our children. We can’t make little Gertrude or Elrod eat “of the Lord,” but we can sure make the “food” is available.  We will be held accountable for the way the way we raise our children.  We won’t be for the way they choose to live.  That is their choice.

Perhaps you have an “Asa” who longs to please the Lord.  That is awesome.  Your job is much easier.  You may have an “Abijam” (Asa’s father) who was wicked and did what was evil in the sight of God. Then you have your work cut out for you.  The only position to take with “Abijams” is on your knees.  Give them to the Lord and live your life in honor of Him.

Which king are you?  Are you David who sought after the Lord?  Are you a Solomon who, although he was wise, was foolish?  Are you Rehoboam who lost the kingdom due to following unwise counsel?  Are you Abijam who refused to bow to the Lord?  Or are you Asa who sought to follow the Lord and please Him in all he did?  It’s your choice. But every choice has consequences.

O Lord, give me the heart of David and Asa.  Help me to seek after You and to please you in all I do.  Give me the wisdom to teach my children to follow, not in my footsteps, but yours.
