2 Kings 2:9 “When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you.’ And Elisha said, ‘Please, let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.’”
What a request! Elisha knew the acts of Elijah. He had been a bold prophet of God and had been used greatly by the Lord. Now, as his apprentice, Elisha is asking for twice the spirit. Sounds kind of cocky, doesn’t it? Maybe not.
Have you ever been around someone who just reeks of Jesus? I mean, you can just see Jesus all over them. If you could, wouldn’t you want to be just like that, in fact, even more so? Well, of course you would. Who wouldn’t want to be more spiritual? Who wouldn’t want a closer walk with the Lord?
Have your kids ever said, “When I grow up I want to be just like you, Mom”? Chances are they have said that when they were little. Don’t you want them to be better than you? Don’t you want them to love Jesus even more than you? As a good parent we should all want that. We should want more for our kids than we have ourselves. We want them to walk with Christ in a way that makes our walk look futile.
Well then, you have to walk in a manner that reflects that to them. You have to be so intent on leading them to Christ that it is just a normal part of their life. They should want to follow you because you exemplify Christ. They should want to follow you because they want to be – just like Jesus.
Just like Elisha had to see Elijah being taken up to receive the double portion of the Spirit, we have to be watching Jesus to be like Him. We have to keep our eyes on Him, not on others.
