BE THE RIGHT INSTRUMENT

ROMANS 6:13

“and do not go on presenting the parts of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead, and your body’s parts as instruments of righteousness for God.”

Doctors who spend time in the operating room have specific surgical instruments they use for each surgical procedure. If they use the wrong instrument, they can do more harm than good. No one wants that, especially the patient. When the correct instrument is used, healing can begin.

Today’s verse is one of my memory verses with our ministry, Every Man A Warrior. It’s a constant reminder to focus our attention on serving our true Master Jesus Christ, not our old master – sin. We need to be the correct instrument of righteousness so we can impact our world around us for good. If we choose to be the wrong instrument (unrighteousness), it only leads to death.

APPLICATION

The word translated “presenting” or “present” is parístēmi “(from pará, ‘from close-beside’ and hístēmi, ‘to stand’) – properly, stand close beside, i.e. ready to present (exhibit).” (HELPS Word-studies) Perhaps a better translation is “to yield.” But it is not just the definition. The verb tenses Paul used for each use tells us something bigger.

In the first use of parístēmi in the verse, it is in the Present Indicative. That is an ongoing, habitual or repeated action. We are not to continuously yield ourselves to sin as an unrighteous instrument. Sure, we are going to sin. But for a follower of Christ, that should be an accident, not a willful, repeated action.

The next time the word is used in the verse it is in the Aorist Indicative. That means it is a simple, completed action or point in time without indicating a duration. In other words, Paul is saying we yield ourselves to God once which does not need to be repeated over and over. You are saved once. It is not necessary to do that over and over again.

What kind of instrument are you today? Are you an instrument of righteousness or unrighteousness, of good or evil? You really do have a choice, but you have the power within you, if you are a follower of Christ, to choose correctly. You have the Holy Spirit to guide and equip you. Stop yielding to the sinful choices and allow the Spirit to live through you to accomplish all that the Lord has for you.

Make me an instrument for You, O Lord. I choose today to place myself in Your hands.

DISOBEDIENCE VS OBEDIENCE

ROMANS 5:19

“For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.”

I think I was a pretty obedient child until… In my preteen and teenage years, I became pretty disobedient. I don’t need to elaborate on my disobedience. You can probably figure it out. I was a teen in the 70’s when things were getting pretty crazy on the drug scene. I knew the right thing to do. I just chose not to do it. I wanted to do what I wanted to do and didn’t think too much about the consequences. That’s just plain sin. Thankfully, all that is under the blood.

In today’s verse Paul uses two different Greek words to describe disobedience and obedience. They are both built on the same Greek word akoúō but have different prefixes which drastically changes their meanings. Let’s take a look at these two words and as we do, think how you are responding to what you have heard the Master say.

APPLICATION

The first word used by Paul is parako. It is “(from pará, ‘contrary by close comparison’ and akoúō, ‘hear’) – properly, contrary-hearing, i.e. disobedience which springs from a negative (opposingattitude, i.e. the refusal to listen properly.” (HELPS Word-studies) This word has the idea of just plain refusing to listen and refusing to comply. This implies a bad attitude that does not want to obey.

It’s only found two other times in the New Testament. In Hebrews 2:2 we read, “For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every violation and act of disobedience received a just punishment,…” Then over in 2 Corinthians 10:6 it is used when it says, “and we are ready to punish all disobedience, whenever your obedience is complete.”

Then we come to the word Paul uses for obedience. It is hypako “(from hypó, ‘beneath’ and akoúō, ‘to hear’) i.e. obedience – literally, ‘submission to what is heard’, i.e. obedience as the response to someone speaking. This refers both to an earthly voice and the Lord’s voice.” (HELPS Word-studies) It is used 15 times in the New Testament (7 in Romans) 1 Pet 1:2 uses this word. “according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.”

Isn’t that the bottom line – obedience to Christ? Nothing else really matters. We can obey others but not be obedient to Christ. It’s been said you will serve a master in one way or the other. Do you choose to obey your own master or The Master? One brings death and the other brings righteousness (Romans 6:16). Choose wisely.

O Lord, I want to obey You and none other.

NONE ARE RIGHTEOUS

ROMANS 3:10

“as it is written: ‘THERE IS NO RIGHTEOUS PERSON, NOT EVEN ONE;…’”

We begin with today’s verse a series of quotations from the Old Testament from which Paul is pointing out that Jews are just as guilty as the Gentiles. These passages seem to be taken from the Septuagint (LXX) which is the Greek Old Testament. Meyer’s NT Commentary says, “The arrangement is such that testimony is adduced for—1st, the state of sin generally (Romans 3:10-12); 2nd, the practice of sin in word (Romans 3:13-14) and deed (Romans 3:15-17); and 3rd, the sinful source of the whole (Romans 3:18).” Let’s jump into it.

Paul is quoting Psalm 14:1-3 which he continues in 3:11-12. Psalm 14:1-3 reads, “1 The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, they have committed detestable acts; There is no one who does good. 2 The LORD has looked down from heaven upon the sons of mankind to see if there are any who understand, who seek God. 3 They have all turned aside, together they are corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.” We’ll break these down over the next couple of days.

APPLICATION

How does this quotation from Psalm 143 apply to us? Well, we are just as unrighteous outside of Christ. It seems I hear more and more people denying God or worse yet, blaspheming our holy God. David says it clearly, they are a “fool” who says there is no God. As a follower of Christ, I can give you time after time where God has proved Himself to me. But you have to be looking.

You see, the Jews thought just because they were Jews, they were okay. I have met several Jews who had no spiritual life at all. They were Jewish by blood, but they did not practice their faith. They will call on “Hashem” when they want something or in desperation, but the idea of a daily walk with Jehovah is foreign to them.

We are told in today’s verse that “not even one” person is righteous. The Greek oude is translated as “not even” which is used to expound on the statement before it, “There is no righteous person.” In other words, absolutely no one, nada. That “no one” includes me and you. But thanks be to God that He imputed the righteousness of Christ on us at salvation. Praise Him today!

Lord, I give You praise that You have made me righteous, not according to anything I have done but solely through the righteousness of Jesus.

OUR UNRIGHTEOUSNESS

ROMANS 3:5

“But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking from a human viewpoint.)”

We will never fully understand the righteousness of God this side of eternity. How can a God, a righteous God put up with our unrighteousness? Well, He can’t. The question posed by Paul in today’s verse is really meant to show us the folly of this kind of thinking. Paul even admits he is talking from a human viewpoint.

The thought that Paul is throwing out here is this. If our sins give God the opportunity to show His righteousness, how can He punish our sin? That is obviously what Paul was hearing from some. Yea, I sin, but God still loves me and it gives Him the chance to forgive me. How stupid! God can never condone sin, nor can He overlook it. Sin requires confession and repentance. God can only be righteous.

APPLICATION

This is a difficult verse. We know as followers of Christ that our sin has to be confessed. We know that God demands repentance in order to bestow forgiveness. But this verse, taken by itself, might seem to imply that our sins give God more opportunities to show His righteousness. The second question in this verse is one we all would agree to. “The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is he?” Of course, that answer is NO.

I am thinking of 1 John 1:9-10. “9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous, so that He will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.” You see His righteous acts toward us follow our confession. Don’t ever be confused by that. Unrighteousness + confession = righteousness.

Our goal should be to not sin. We should not be sinning and excusing our behaviors. We will see Romans 6:1 later, but it fits so well with today’s verse. “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase?” Paul goes on in 6:2 to say, “May it never be!” That should be our attitude towards sin. May it never be!

Lord, sometimes difficult verses have simple meanings. Thank You for forgiving our confessed sins.

NOT A PRETTY LIST

ROMANS 1:29

people having been filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, and evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice; they are gossips,”

I have often made pros and cons lists when I needed to make a decision. It could be about a move somewhere or trying to decide about a new job. I know some people who have those kinds of lists about whom they will date. It doesn’t make much sense to make a decision when the cons outweigh the pros, right? Aren’t you glad God didn’t weigh us that way?

In today’s verse, Paul begins a list that is pretty bad. It’s a list of behaviors and lifestyles that go against every fabric of decency, much less any sort of godliness. Now, before you start judging people over these behaviors, remember that all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. Our job as believers is to walk in such a way that we avoid these behaviors. The key to the verse is the participle verb at the beginning, “having been filled.” Let’s look at that.

APPLICATION

“Having been filled” is from the Greek verb pléroó. It can be translated as “to fully, completely fill, (literally) to cram (a net), level up (a hollow), (figuratively) to fully supply, satisfy, execute (an office), finish (a period or task), verify (or coincide with a prediction).” (Lexical Summary) So, you see it can have lots of meanings. Barnes says about this phrase, “Being filled – That is, the things which he specifies were common or abounded among them. This is a strong phrase, denoting that these things were so often practiced as that it might be said they were full of them. We have a phrase like this still, when we say of one that he is full of mischief, etc.”

These were not one-time events in these people’s lives. This was their lifestyle. We all sin. We all fail. But we cannot stay there. We can’t remain in the sin. We can’t continue in the sin “that so easily entangles us.” I once talked with a guy who “slipped” four times and had sex with women other than his wife. And he couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t forgive him. Lifestyles matter when it comes to living for Jesus. Amen?

I don’t really need to go through the list of things Paul mentions here. You can look all those up if you want further explanations of them. The point I want to make is we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit, not hedonistic lifestyles. We need to be filled with the motive to glorify Jesus in all we do, not glorify our own fleshly appetites. What or Who is filling you today?

Fill my cup, Lord. I lift it up, Lord. Come and quench the thirsting of my soul.

WHAT IS SIN?

1 JOHN 5:17

“All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not leading to death.”

The Bible talks a lot about righteousness and unrighteousness. We Christians use these terms when we are talking about God. But have you ever stopped to think what these terms mean? What use is it to talk about something we can’t define?

Righteousness has to do with abiding by God’s standards, meeting His expectations. Unrighteousness, of course, means just the opposite. It means deviating from what God expects. This results in God’s disapproval of our choices. In short, it’s sin.

APPLICATION

Your children should know your expectations, right? They can’t follow rules they aren’t clear on. Now, for children we need to keep our rules and guidelines short and to the point. Complicated rules only confuse them. When we make our expectations clear and concise, they are more likely to obey.

We are laying the groundwork for them to obey God. When they come to a saving knowledge of Jesus and accept Him as their Savior, His righteousness is bestowed on them. We teach them to pursue this and not the unrighteous deeds that are so prevalent. We hold them to His standards. We show the benefits of pursuing a godly lifestyle. This is a process that takes years. We model it for them and live our lives pursuing the very things we are teaching them.

Would you classify your lifestyle as one of righteousness or unrighteousness? I know, I know. We all say righteousness. We would never admit unrighteousness. But if we are not pursuing God’s standards in every area of our lives, it is so easy to drift into unrighteousness. If we sin in one area, it affects our entire life. Live righteously today. Pursue God wholly.

Help me, Lord, to flee from all unrighteousness. I want to pursue You. Your righteousness is all I need.
