STRIVING

COLOSSIANS 4:12

“Epaphras, who is one of your own, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, sends you his greetings, always striving earnestly for you in his prayers, that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God.”

Often when you hear the word “striving” it has a negative connotation. We are trying hard, perhaps too hard to accomplish something. In the Christian world we might say that person is trying to do it in the flesh rather than the Spirit. But striving is not always bad. Let’s see what the Word has to say about it.

Paul says that Epaphras was “always striving earnestly” for others in his prayers. What a compliment! Wouldn’t it be great to be known for that? Epaphras could be counted on to pray for you if he said he would. So, was his striving a bad thing? No, let’s look at some other ways this word is used in Scripture.

APPLICATION

The word used here is agónizomai which means to struggle or to labor fervently. Jesus Himself used this word. We see that in Luke 13:22-24. “22 And He was passing through one city and village after another, teaching, and proceeding on His way to Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to Him, ‘Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?’ And He said to them, 24 ‘Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.’” We should strive to enter that narrow door.

In one of the best passages from Paul, we find the word used again in 2 Timothy 4:7. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith;” Agónizomai is translated as “have fought.” Do you see the picture Scripture is trying to paint of this word. Striving is real. We all have our struggles. But it’s important to make sure that we are striving in the Spirit and not our flesh.

We get our word “agonize” from agónizomai. Have you ever agonized over something? Have you, like Epaphraas, ever agonized in prayer? There have been times in my life I did. God hears us. He knows the pain we are going through. Let me encourage you to strive a little more earnestly in your prayer life. I promise it will draw you closer to Him.

I cry out to You, O Lord. I know You hear and will answer according to Your perfect will.

BIBLICAL STRIVING

COLOSSIANS 1:29

“For this purpose I also labor, striving according to His power which works mightily within me.”

The thought of striving tires me out, lol. As I have gotten older, it takes less and less to make me tired. I don’t know about you, but when I bend down to pick something up, I always look around to see if I need to do anything else while I am down there. Just saying! So, when Paul talks about striving today, I was a little nervous.

Today’s verse is linked back to the previous verse by the phrase “for this purpose.” Actually, in the Greek, it reads “for this” which refers back to verse 28 (take a second and go back read that verse). Paul says he labors or toils, but then he clarifies this. He says, “striving according to His power.” Paul knew we could accomplish nothing outside the power of Christ “which works mightily within me.”

APPLICATION

Strong’s Lexicon gives a great explanation of the Greek word for “striving.” “The verb agónizomai conveys the idea of engaging in a struggle or contest, often with a sense of intense effort or determination. In the New Testament, it is used metaphorically to describe the spiritual and moral effort required in the Christian life. It implies a sense of perseverance and dedication in the face of challenges, akin to an athlete competing in a race or a soldier in battle.”

This word is used 8 times in the New Testament. Let’s look at a couple. In 1 Corinthians 9:25, we see it used in this way. “Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. So they do it to obtain a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.” It’s compared to the physical activity of an athlete in games. So, it can involve physical exertion.

In 1 Timothy 6:12, we see an even harder usage. “Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” It’s actually used to talk about fighting. If you don’t know we are in a battle with spiritual forces of darkness, you have already lost that fight.

How are you striving? If you attempt to strive in your own might, you won’t make it. If you only half-heartedly strive, you will fall. If you don’t know against whom you are striving, you will lose those battles. Realize it is His power in you that strives. Submit yourself to Him and win.

Father, I thank You that I am not striving alone. I know You have my back.

MADNESS

ZECHARIAH 12:4

“‘On that day,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will strike every horse with confusion and its rider with insanity. But I will watch over the house of Judah, while I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness.’”

There have been times, as hard as I try, I just can’t accomplish something. I give it my best efforts. I am fully prepared, but I just can’t get it done. When that happens, I have learned to stop and look at what I am trying to do. Is it in the Father’s will? Is this of my own doing? Almost every time I discover I have been trying to do something I have no business trying to do. It is not God’s plan for me, at least not at that time.

The prophecy of chapter 12 continues in verse 4 with the Lord declaring victory over the armies that will assail Israel. He will confuse their horses and riders, even to the point of striking the horses blind. Most scholars point towards the battle of Gog and Magog, in which Israel will be defended by the Lord against all the nations that will come against her. They were trying to do something that God would not allow. What a promise!

APPLICATION

What are you banging your head against right now? Perhaps you are considering a move, but you cannot get a peace about it. Maybe it’s a job change, but try as you might, nothing happens. It could be a relationship that needs healing. You’ve tried all your “magic,” but nothing works. It could be that now is not the time for this. For some reason, God is blocking or just not allowing it to happen.

Psalm 46:10 comes to mind. “‘Stop striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted on the earth.’” I love this translation. Some say, “Be still,” but I like “Stop striving.” The Hebrew word has the picture of relaxing, of sinking into a relaxed position. Wow! That sure gives you a great visual, doesn’t it?

When is the last time you did that? Have you truly rested in God’s decisions for your life? He wants you to place yourself completely at His mercy. He is holding you in His hands. Stop trying to achieve something that you have no business trying to achieve. Just like those riders and horses that were stopped cold in their tracks, God can stop you also. But when you trust Him and allow Him to direct you, things are so much more relaxing.

O Father, I have been struggling against Your will on some things. Forgive me and show me how to rest in You.
