LOOK ALIKES

ROMANS 6:5

“For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,”

My little grandson looks like both of his parents. One day he looks more like his dad and other days like his mom. It will be interesting to watch him grow and develop to see who he really looks like. His little sister will be here shortly, and we will see who she resembles. We already know from the ultrasounds that she has a head full of hair unlike her big brother whose hair is just now getting full.

But Paul isn’t talking about physical resemblances. The word he uses here for “likeness” is homoióma which “expresses the idea of something that corresponds to, represents, or resembles another reality.” (Topical Lexicon) Four of the six times the word is used in the New Testament are in Romans. We’ve already seen two of those (Romans 1:23 and 5:14). Paul uses it again in Romans 8:3 in a negative way when he writes, “For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh…”

APPLICATION

I referenced Philippians 2:7 in an earlier blog where this word is used again. There it describes Jesus “being made in the likeness of men.” I want you to stop and think about this for a second. Christ came in the likeness of mankind in order to pay the ultimate price for OUR sin, not His. Even though He was 100% man, He was also 100% God. He was the God Man sent from the Father to redeem us. Praise the Lord!

Are you walking in His likeness today? When people see you out in the public, or better yet, driving down the highway, do they see Jesus? We have been raised to walk in newness of life because of His resurrection and are supposed to be looking like Him. I have to admit that sometimes I am not the least bit looking like Jesus. I allow the worries of this life weigh me down. Jesus never worried, so neither should I.

When you look in the mirror today to brush or comb your hair, ask yourself if you look like Jesus. Of course, I don’t mean your physical appearance. I mean do you reflect His manner of living here on this earth. He lived a sinless life and commands us to live holy lives also. Choose today whose likeness you will bear – your own sinful self or Jesus’ likeness.

Lord God, continue to make me look more and more like Jesus in how I talk and act.

FINISHED WORK

ROMANS 4:25

He who was delivered over because of our wrongdoings, and was raised because of our justification.

My dad always taught me to finish the job completely. My first lesson in that was mowing the grass. He said the yard wasn’t complete until all the pinecones were picked up and the trim work was done (this was before we had weed eaters). He also taught me that a car wasn’t cleaned completely until the tires were clean. He compared that to wearing a nice suit but dirty shoes. He was all about getting the job finished well.

Jesus finished His job completely. Paul states as such in today’s verse. He wasn’t just “delivered over” for our sins. He was also “raised because of our justification.” His resurrection finished the job. His shed blood paid the price for our sins, and His resurrection gave us the promise of eternal life. What a complete work that was and still is.

APPLICATION

The verb used here for “delivered over” is paradidómi. In Matthew 10:4 it is used to describe Judas Iscariot. “Judas Iscariot, the one who also betrayed Him.” The Topical Lexicon says this about this word. “Whether used of a traitor, a judge, an apostle, or God Himself, the word always carries the sober idea that what is ‘delivered up’ passes irrevocably into another’s control.” What does that say about God’s actions described in today’s verse? God did not betray Jesus. He willingly gave Him up to death to satisfy His own wrath on mankind.

But God always has a plan, a perfect plan. He also raised Jesus up. The verb used for “raised” is egeiró which Strong’s defines as “to waken (transitively or intransitively), i.e. Rouse (literally, from sleep, from sitting or lying, from disease, from death; or figuratively, from obscurity, inactivity, ruins, nonexistence) — awake, lift (up), raise (again, up), rear up, (a-)rise (again, up), stand, take up.”

Now, to be clear, Jesus didn’t just go to sleep on that cross. He died. He gave up this life on earth only to be raised by His Father to defeat death and the grave. As followers of Christ, we too will defeat death and the grave. How? Through our justification in Christ! We give up this life on earth and pass directly to a better life with Christ eternally. Thank You, Lord!

I give You praise for all You have done in and through Your Son, Jesus.

HORIZONS

ROMANS 1:4

“who was declared the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,”

Depending on where you live and the topography around you, you may or may not clearly see the horizons that surround you. If you live in a mountainous area, you will see a jagged horizon and if live in a desert region, it may appear more as a straight line. I love to see the western horizon when I am at the beach. I love to watch the sun set and disappear with all the accompanying colors. But try as I might, I do not have the power to set my horizons. They are set by One far greater than I.

In today’s verse, we have a Greek word that is translated as “was declared” from which we get our English word “horizon.” God has declared or “set the boundary” which determined Jesus as the Son of God. He used the Holy Spirit to do that through the resurrection so that all mankind could see that “horizon.” Jesus has always been the Son of God, but God wanted all of us to see that clearly, just like that sunset I described at the beach.

APPLICATION

In Acts 10:42 we read where Peter uses horizo to describe Jesus. “‘And He ordered us to preach to the people, and to testify solemnly that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead.’” Jesus’ declaration by God also included His role as Judge. He is the One who sits in judgment over all mankind. As followers of Christ, we will not face the same judgment as the unbeliever. But He is still our Judge.

As Paul was speaking on Mars Hill in Acts 17:31, he uses this same word. “‘…because He has set a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all people by raising Him from the dead.’” The intellects of the day needed to hear that there was a supreme God who had come in the form of man to reign over all other gods. God had declared Jesus as His Son with all the authority to do that.

Do you believe? Are you following? If you answered “yes,” then the choice is clear. You must obey. You must obey the One who has been declared as the true horizon in your life. Only He sets the boundaries. No one can push the boundaries of your life. And if you have made that choice to obey, He has declared you as righteous in His sight. Live that way.

Thank You for declaring Jesus as Your Son, worthy of all praise and glory.

FACE-TO-FACE

PHILIPPIANS 3:11

“if somehow I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.”

I do a lot of Zoom calls with men around the world. I say often that I wish I had invested in Zoom before Covid hit in 2020. I could have retired by now, lol. Zoom is great when you can’t meet face to face, but I still prefer that physical meeting. You can hide a lot of your body language in Zoom. Heck, you can even hide yourself by just cutting off the video. Or you can mute yourself. You can’t do those things if you are meeting in the same room.

Why am I talking about Zoom? Well, the word Paul uses in today’s verse for “may attain” (katantao) comes from two Greek words, kata and antao. It literally means to come face-to-face, to reach a destination. Paul desires to arrive at this point in his life. He is in prison. He is perhaps tired and weary. His spirit yearns for his heavenly home. I want to give you an explanation of this verse from Albert Barnes. I believe he explains it well. “Paul believed that all the dead would be raised (Acts 24:15; Acts 26:6-8); and in this respect he would certainly attain to the resurrection of the dead, in common with all mankind.”

APPLICATION

Katantaois used by Paul in Ephesians 4:13 where we are told, “until we all attain to the unity of the faith.” This attaining hints at our spiritual journey. It’s a journey we will be on until we are taken home to heaven. We will arrive or come face-to-face one day, but not now. Right now, we are trying to attain this unity.

Is there something you are trying to attain? Katantao can refer to a physical or spiritual journey. You may be planning a vacation or a holiday this summer. You probably have a destination in mind. As you make this trip, think about this verse and this word. You will attain your destination on this holiday, but you will always be seeking to attain your spiritual destination to the day you die.

Carl, are you telling me my spiritual journey is unattainable? In a way, yes, I am. We will not see Jesus face-to-face here on this earth. We may be one of the lucky ones who are raptured and will meet Him in the air. If not, we will meet Him the moment we die. Paul says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Are you ready to attain that? I am! Can’t wait!

Lord, one day You will take me home. I will attain the full promises You have made to me.

SUFFERING AND DEATH

PHILIPPIANS 3:10

“that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;”

There are a lot of people I can’t wait to get to know when I get to heaven. How exactly did it smell inside that fish, Jonah? Paul, did you write Hebrews? And Jesus, what was your childhood like? Even though I want to get to know all the saints in heaven, I do not want to experience all the trials they had here on earth. But in today’s verse, Paul says exactly that.

The word Paul uses for “know” is ginóskó. This Greek word for “know” is to know especially through personal experience. It’s the word used when Mary said she had not known a man yet. But Paul isn’t just talking about knowing Jesus and learning more about Him. He says to know “the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings.” And Paul did experience his own sufferings and eventual death by beheading.

APPLICATION

If I asked you to join me in my sufferings and death for Jesus, what would you do? Probably run as fast as you could away from me. Peter tells us in 1 Peter 4:12-13, “12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though something strange were happening to you; 13  but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that at the revelation of His glory you may also rejoice and be overjoyed.”

Now, that sounds absolutely crazy, right? Rejoice in sufferings? James says the same thing in James 1:2-4. “Consider it all joy…” Have these writers of God’s Word lost it? Of course not. They are simply penning the very thoughts and words of God. God is telling us to rejoice in these sufferings. Rejoice if you are called on to give up your life for Jesus. Then you will fully know Him.

Okay Carl, I’m not planning on doing that any time soon, so how can I know Him more fully today? Die to self! Crucify your flesh! Die to every selfish desire you have and give it all to Him. When you do suffer a trial of some sort, trust Him in it and give Him praise. Do you want to really know Jesus? Then you have to join him in his suffering and death. Come to Him. Let Him show Himself to you.

Father, I will rejoice in the trials that come my way knowing that You have allowed them to purify me.

HE’S ALIVE

JOHN 20:8 “So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb also entered then, and he saw and believed.”

So many times we hear things we just can’t believe. Someone has done some magnificent show of strength perhaps. Or someone has invented some new creation. We hear it but don’t believe it. Then other times we actually see something we can’t believe. A magic act or a freak act of nature. But seeing is believing, they say.

Jesus had been telling the disciples He was going to die and rise again. They just couldn’t comprehend it. But when they found the empty tomb and the linen wraps lying there, they believed. Can you imagine being John or Peter or Mary that first Easter morning? Can you imagine the surge of excitement that ran through their veins?

APPLICATION

Sure you can! Look afresh at the empty tomb. It’s still empty. There are no bones of Christ to be found. He came, died and rose again! We should have just as much as excitement at Easter as Peter, John and Mary did. We should stand in awe of the miracle of the resurrection.

And the beautiful thing about the resurrection is this – He did it all for us. Jesus didn’t rise from the grave to prove how great He was. He didn’t need to do that. God is not a glory hound. He doesn’t need to lift Himself up. He is God – period.

Jesus rose from the grave to defeat death for us. When we place our faith in Him, all that He did becomes ours. His death on the cross and the blood He shed becomes our sacrifice to appease God. And His resurrection becomes our resurrection. We will defeat the sting of death because He did. We will live eternally with our Savior.

Father, I thank You for the resurrected Christ. I thank You for the power over the grave. And I thank You for the empty tomb. Hallelujah, what a Savior!

ARISE

ACTS 9:40

“But Peter sent them all out and knelt down and prayed, and turning to the body, he said, ‘Tabitha, arise.’ And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up.”

Acts 9:36-43 tells the story of Peter raising Tabitha (Dorcas in the Greek language) from the dead. What a wonderful story. Isn’t it? There were many friends of Tabitha there when this happened, so the word spread quickly throughout Joppa. What do you think happened?

Verse 42 tells us. “It became known all over Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.” This is the reason the Lord worked through Peter to raise Tabitha. It really wasn’t about her. It was about all those who would be led to the Lord. Bringing the spiritually dead to life is much more important than bringing the physically dead to life.

APPLICATIONS

Did you know your children are dead before they come to Christ? They are spiritually dead waiting to arise. As parents we pray for our children’s salvation and rejoice greatly when they surrender to the call of our Lord. You may be parents of unsaved children. Don’t stop praying. God is still raising dead people.

Once your children are saved and walking with the Lord, your job is to keep them “alive.” What do I mean by that? Walking in newness requires daily dying to self. Wnhe you die to self, you have to get up and walk with Christ through His life. You die and then arise. You surrender to Jesus daily and allow Him to direct your steps. Your children need to know this truth.

Are you dead or alive? Are you the dead Tabitha or the alive Tabitha? Your risen life in Christ can be used, like Tabitha’s, to draw many others to Jesus. Wouldn’t that be awesome? By your daily surrender to Him, others can see Jesus in you. Arise!

I want to walk in newness of life with You today. I lay my life before You to use however You desire. I want to draw others to You through my surrendered life.

UNDESERVED GIFTS

1 PETER 2:22

“WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH;”

Yesterday was Easter. What a perfect verse we have today to remind us of Christ’s innocence. He didn’t deserve to die. He had done no wrong. But He took on Himself my sin and your sin in order to give to us something we did not deserve – His righteousness. Wow! What a gift!

Have you ever gotten a gift you didn’t deserve? I have had friends bless me with gifts. During my recent illness I had several friends who blessed us financially. They wanted to help ease the burden of traveling back and forth to the hospital and the month and a half stay away from home. We didn’t deserve this, but they gave anyway. Jesus gave His all when we didn’t deserve it.

APPLICATION

Surprise your children with a gift. They may have been terrible yesterday and disobeyed you all day long. Perfect! Give them a gift they are not expecting. When they ask you why you are giving them such a gift, explain to them the gift that Jesus gave you when you didn’t deserve it. Let them know that Jesus loves us that much. He doesn’t wait for us to get better to save us. He saves us just like we are.

Ask your children if they know what innocent means. You may have to explain that to them. Tell them that Jesus had never done anything wrong, even when He was a little boy. Every action He took reflected His Father in heaven. And despite His innocence, He took on the guilt of the world. Why? To give us this undeserved gift of salvation.

Have you thanked the Lord today for your undeserved gift of salvation? Do that right now. I’ll wait…. Now, don’t you feel better? It’s always good to thank someone for the gifts we have been given, especially those undeserved gifts. Do that daily, as He continues to bless you.

Dear Lord, I thank You for blessing me. I only deserve hell, but You have chosen me to be Your child and have given me a gift which I could never repay. I love You, Lord.

WHERE DID HE GO?

JOHN 20:6-7

“6 And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7 and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself.”

Don’t you know Peter’s first thought was Where did He go? I am sure he didn’t remember right away that Jesus had told them He would rise from the dead. Jesus had told them but not in so many words. All Peter knew was Jesus had died and now He was not in that tomb. He had been told by Mary that He was alive, but he needed to see Him for himself.

And what about the linens? There were two piles – one where the body was and another with the wrappings from the head. It was as if Jesus had unwrapped Himself. Was that possible? Or did the angels he heard had been here done that. This was just too much to take in. Where was Jesus?

APPLICATION

Sometimes we see things that we just can’t believe. I have a friend who is a Christian illusionist. He can do things that make you scratch your head. I have often said when I watch him perform that there is no way he just did that. Of course, all his illusions are tricks. He will tell you that himself.

Jesus had not just performed a parlor trick. He had really risen from the dead. Ask your children if they have ever met anyone who has done that. Of course, they will think you’re crazy for even asking that. But then remind them, when you meet Jesus and ask Him into your heart, you just met someone who has done that. No one else has defeated death themselves. Jesus simply threw off the grave clothes and walked out of a sealed tomb.

Do you believe everything you see? You shouldn’t. But you should believe this. Jesus is alive. He is seated right now beside His Father, as much alive as when He walked the earth. His position in heaven does not diminish His life in the least. And He wants you to live each day with that knowledge. Live knowing He’s alive.

Knowing You are alive gives me hope for tomorrow. You are always watching over me and walking beside me. I may not can see You now, but I know You are there.

FOOT RACE

LUKE 24:12

“But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings only; and he went away to his home, marveling at what had happened.”

I think it’s funny that here in Luke it says, “But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. In John 20, we read that John went with him and outran him. Lol. No one wants to admit they got beat in a foot race.

But this story isn’t about who won the foot race. It’s about the destination of the foot race. Where were they running? Why were they running? They had just been told that Jesus’ tomb was empty. They couldn’t wait to check it out themselves.

APPLICATION

Okay, it’s foot race time. Gather your children and go outside for the race. Set the finish line out of their sight and explain that there will be a surprise when they get there. Watch how fast they line up to race. Surprises are exciting. Surprises get us every time.

When they all get there give them a special treat. If you can find them, get them one of those Resurrection Eggs. Kids love them. Read them this story and ask them how they think Peter felt when he got to the tomb and found it empty. Surprised? Shocked? Excited? Sad?

How would you have felt if you had been Peter? Your last experience with Jesus was shame. Now you have just been told He’s alive and wants to see you. How would you have been feeling? Embarrassed or excited? It’s no different today. He wants to see you. Even when you mess up, He forgives you and longs to be with you.

Lord, I long to be in Your presence. I look forward to Your embrace. Forgive me for all those times I have fallen short of Your calling.
