NEWNESS OF THE SPIRIT

ROMANS 7:6

“But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.”

When I met my wife of over 40 years, we were friends and coworkers. She was one of my many friends and coworkers. That was a quantitative relationship. But when we got married our relationship changed from just friends to family. That was a qualitative change. She wasn’t just one of my friends anymore. We were husband and wife and in a totally different kind of relationship.

Why in the world am I talking about that? Because Paul uses a word in today’s verse that needs further explanation. When he writes “newness of the Spirit,” he uses the Greek word kainotés which is only used here and back in Romans 6:4 (newness of life). The Topical Lexicon says “kainotēs conveys the idea of qualitative ‘newness,’ a state or mode of existence that stands in sharp contrast to what has gone before. It is never a mere novelty: in Scripture it points to the decisive, divinely wrought transition from the old age under sin to the new age inaugurated by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.” We have a totally changed relationship to God because of Jesus.

APPLICATION

Not to overuse a source, but I want to also give you another quote from the Topical Lexicon. It’s a pretty powerful statement about the use of kainotēs in the two verses we are looking at. “Romans 6:4 and Romans 7:6 serve as theological pillars, illustrating both the accomplished reality and ongoing outworking of that divine newness in personal sanctification, corporate worship, and eschatological hope.” (Topical Lexicon) If you aren’t shouting, you should be. It’s accomplished and ongoing! Glory to God.

Newness of life and newness in the Spirit. What else could you want. At salvation we are given that newness in life. The old self dies and the new self is resurrected to walk with Him through each day of your life. That walk is possible because we also have the newness of the Spirit. Jesus told us He would give us a Comforter, and He did. He lives in and through us and helps us take each step.

Now listen close. Lean in here. Walk in that qualitative newness. It’s not like anything you had before Jesus. Any religious high you may have experienced won’t measure up. Any vow or promise you made to God won’t hold up to it. We have the freedom in Christ to now walk in newness of life and in the Spirit. Think about that. No more trudging along just trying to make it. We can literally and spiritually hop, skip and jump through life because of this newness. Start walking that way.

O Lord, I am so thankful for the newness You have given me in Jesus.

WALKING IN NEWNESS

ROMANS 6:4

“Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life.”

I have shared many times in this blog that I am a walker. Most mornings I get up early before sunrise and walk about three miles in my neighborhood. Every morning is a fresh walk, brand new to me. I may walk the same path every day, but I see different stars or planets in the early morning sky. I may see different cars in our neighborhood and even a new “For Sale” sign in front of one of the houses. My walks never get old. They are new every morning.

Paul uses a word for “newness” that is only used one other time in the New Testament. We’ll see that later in the next chapter of Romans. The word is kainotés. The Topical Lexicon says this about the use of this word here. “Kainotēs here describes a life sourced in resurrection power, characterized by freedom from sin’s dominion.” Our newness is directly tied to Christ’s resurrection power in our lives which gives us that victory over sin’s power. Hallelujah!

APPLICATION

This verse reminds me of Lamentations 3:22-23 which read, “22 The LORD’S acts of mercy indeed do not end, for His compassions do not fail. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” Isn’t that a great promise from the Lord? God’s compassions do not fail. They are brand new every morning. Now, technically God’s compassions have been around for a long time and will continue into the future. But the particular compassion or mercy He gives you today is new to you and is designed just for you.

So, when the Lord tells us in today’s verse that we are to walk in newness of life, He means just that. Embrace the newness of your life in Christ. Enjoy the freshness of it. Each day when I step out my front door to begin my walk, I look up into the night sky to see the newness that greets me. I should also approach my walk with Christ each day. Instead of worrying about my future, I should step out in the newness of it, knowing that Christ has my back.

Look back at our verse. The first part tells us that we have been buried with Him through baptism into death. We have died to our old self and have been resurrected anew in Christ. The old things have passed away, right? If the old is gone, that leaves us the new. Today, walk in it. Walk in Him knowing all things are new in Christ. Amen?

God, I thank You for the newness I have in Christ that allows me to walk each day with fresh, spiritual eyes.

RENEWED COMPASSION

PHILIPPIANS 4:10

“But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned before, but you lacked an opportunity to act.”

When I read today’s verse, my mind instantly went to one of my memory passages. Lamentations 3:23-24 says, “22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” That renewed compassion which the Lord has for me is a sweet fragrance. He is constantly reviving His concern for me.

Paul uses a word for “revived” that is only used here in the New Testament. I love what the Topical Lexicon says about this word. It says anathalló “portrays the image of fresh blossoms opening after a dormant season. The term captures the moment when life hidden beneath the surface bursts forth visibly—an apt picture of believers whose love is rekindled into active generosity. Used once in the New Testament, it conveys far more than sentimental warmth; it reveals the God-ordained rhythm of renewed care that accompanies authentic fellowship in the gospel.” Isn’t that beautiful?

APPLICATION

Is there an area of your life that needs reviving? Do you need some “fresh blossoms” in your life? We have this beautiful, yellow rose bush in our yard. We planted it last year when we moved into our house. It has the most fragrant blossoms. Unfortunately, earlier this year it got some kind of fungus and lost most of its leaves. No buds, no blossoms. But after treating it faithfully and tenderly, new leaves are growing and new buds are coming on. I can’t wait to smell those roses again. My life gets that way sometimes, doesn’t yours? We get a spiritual fungus and our growth stops. But God can cure any “fungus” if we come to Him with it. Then He shows His compassion to us fresh every morning.

Paul was referencing the Philippians’ show of love to him once again. They had been so faithful to give to him earlier, but due to distance or circumstances had not been able to send Paul a love gift again. But then Epaphroditus stepped up and volunteered to make the trip to Rome to bring Paul this blessing. Paul received this like fresh rain after a long, dry period. It revived his spirit. Not only that, but it also revived the hearts of the Philippians knowing once again they had blessed their brother.

Maybe the Lord wants to use you as a fresh, fragrant blossom to someone. All it may take is a word of encouragement or maybe a hug. People need to know there are others who are praying for them. When I went through my health crises in 2010 and 2020, knowing others were praying for me got me through. Every time I received a note or a card, it revived me. Be that fragrance today.

Thank You, Lord, for reviving my spirit with Your Spirit each and every day. Let me be used by You to encourage others.

RENEWAL

EPHESIANS 4:23

“and that you are to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,” 

To be renewed, to be refreshed! Don’t you love the feel of a nice, hot (or cold) shower? I was out working in my yard recently very early to avoid the heat of the day. I was putting dirt and mulch in a flower bed we have in the front of our house. Let me tell you, even though it wasn’t a big job, when I got through, I was in desperate need of a shower. I was hot, sweaty and filthy. I needed to be renewed. That shower did the trick.

Paul uses a word translated as “renewed” that is only used right here in the New Testament. It’s the Greek word ananeoó, which comes from aná (up, completing a process) which intensifies néos (recent, new). HELPS Word studies defines it as “going up to a higher stage (level of sanctification) by God’s power; divinely renewed.” Paul is telling the Ephesian believers and us that God has the power to renew our minds.

APPLICATION

I had a phone conversation with a friend of mine this week who has struggled with pornography for years. He was anxious to tell me that the Lord had set him free from this addiction. He described it as being renewed. He feels fresh and clean because his mind has been renewed spiritually. He had tried for years to quit this horrible habit. Finally, after surrendering his mind to Christ, he has been set free. Praise the Lord!

This renewal is comparable to what Jesus said in John 3:3. “Jesus responded and said to him, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.’” Being born again is a renewal of your whole self, your body, mind and spirit. I still remember how I felt when I came to Christ back in July 1977. I was renewed and set free.

There is a laundry detergent that advertises its long lasting fragrance. It claims you can smell it days after washing. I had much rather have the fragrance of Christ on me through the renewal of my mind. It is an eternal renewal. Are you walking in the fragrance of Christ today? Come to Him. Let Him renew your mind today.

I am so thankful, Lord, that You can renew me day after day. Your compassion is new every day.
