METICULOUS

GALATIANS 4:10

“You meticulously observe days and months and seasons and years.” 

Well, there’s a word you don’t use every day – meticulous. What exactly does it mean. In the English, it means “showing great attention to detail; very careful and precise.” That sounds good. My wife can be a very meticulous housekeeper. She wants everything in its place. Honestly, most days I feel like I am living in a magazine cover. I love that about her – her attention to details to make sure our home looks beautiful.

But in Paul’s use of the Greek word translated as meticulous, it is not a very positive thing. In fact, the Greek word Paul uses here is only used five other times. And all those times it is used in a negative context. Four times it is used of the Pharisees watching closely to catch Jesus “abusing” the Sabbath. Once it is used of Paul’s enemies watching the gate to catch Paul. And then here in Galatians Paul says they are trying in vain to keep all these days, months, seasons and years.

APPLICATION

Are you being meticulous about the wrong things? It is a good thing to have your daily Quiet Time. But are you doing it out of habit? Just reading the Bible and praying can become such a routine that you stop getting anything from it. Jesus said this about the Pharisees in Matthew 23:5, “‘And they do all their deeds to be noticed by other people; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments.’”

He also goes on in that same chapter to speak eight woes against the Pharisees. Take a few minutes and read Matthew 23:13-33. But here is just one of those woes which speaks to the meticulousness. Verses 23-24 read, “‘23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the Law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!’”

Don’t be a Pharisee! Don’t be so concerned about the details that you don’t see the fuller picture. God loves you and wants you to enjoy your life in Christ. His Word tells us commandments are not burdensome. Live holy but not legalistic. Celebrate who you are in Christ.

Thank You, Lord, for freeing me from the details and allowing me to be free in Jesus.

GUARDIANS AND MANAGERS

GALATIANS 4:2

“but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by the father.”

Have you ever seen the movie, Mary Poppins? It’s a story about a governess who is hired to care for and teach the children of a family. Julie Andrews plays the key role and does a magical job with the children. Her duties embodied the same duties discussed in today’s verse. However, back in Paul’s day there wasn’t as much magic used, lol.

Continuing the theme from yesterday, Paul explains how the minor child could not do as they pleased with their father’s estate. Normally a slave who was trustworthy would have been put in charge of the children for instruction. These same individuals may have often handled the family assets, thus controlling the disbursement of funds. This would probably have continued if the master of the home had passed until the minor child reached the age set by his father.

APPLICATION

The Law served as our guardian, dictating what we could and couldn’t do. There were strict rules to follow – what to eat, what to wear, etc. These can be found in the Old Testament books of Leviticus and Numbers, as well as other books. For the sake of time, we won’t read all of that. But let me encourage you to take the time, if you haven’t read these books, to dig into them. They are also part of God’s Word and should be read.

However, all those laws have been fulfilled through the atoning death of our Savior. He tells us in Matthew 5:17-18, “17 ‘Do not presume that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter shall pass from the Law, until all is accomplished!’”

Romans 10:4 says, “For Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” That’s the “age set by the father” to be released from the guardianship of the Law. When we accept Jesus, at whatever age that is, we are freed from the requirements of the Law. For me, that was at age 16. I am now an heir of the father’s estate and have full access to all He offers. Praise the Lord! Hallelujah!

O Father, You are far too good to me. May I bring Your honor and praise each day.

FREE AT LAST

GALATIANS 3:25

“But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.”

As I grew up in Southwest Georgia, I was under the direct care and supervision of Jack and Mack Willis. Yep, those were their names. Jack was a nickname for James and Mack was short for Maxine. As their son, I was expected to obey their rules. I didn’t always like their rules (why couldn’t I have cookies for breakfast?) and didn’t always follow them. I knew they meant good by all the rules, but because they were rules, they were meant to be broken, right? At least I thought so.

I love this short but powerful verse today. It simply says faith trumps law. When the early believers, who were used to following the rules of the Law, came to Christ, they were set free. No more restrictions on food. No more rules about what they could and couldn’t do on the Sabbath. They were free because Jesus had satisfied the Law. Paul had felt that himself and wanted everyone who struggled under the heavy weight of the Law to be set free.

APPLICATION

Let me ask you a question. What is it you feel compelled to do in your effort to please God? Name one thing. Did you know the only thing the Lord requires of you is repentance and acceptance of His free gift? Romans 6:23 says so. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Now, who doesn’t want a free gift?

Stop struggling to try to “do” for Jesus. Just “be.” Be like Him. Be holy as He is holy. Be free to live a life that honors Him. Just be. As a Baptist I can tell you that I tried for years to do things. I felt compelled to grab that celestial golden ring. It can’t be done. When I learned to rest in Him, I started living for Him. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.”

Now, do I do certain things as a believer? Yes, I have my daily Quiet Time. I read the Word. I pray. I give to the Body of Christ. But now I do those things out of love, not out of obligation. There is nothing I can do to gain my salvation. And now that I have it, there is nothing I can do to lose it. I am free at last. Are you?

Our freedom in Christ, O God, gives us the ability to live for You. Thank You.

NO ESCAPE

GALATIANS 3:23

“But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the Law, being confined for the faith that was destined to be revealed.”

Click! Click! That is the sound you hear as you enter the jail. I served as a Chaplain for our County Sheriff Department for a while. Part of my duties was to visit the officers in the jail. You see, my role was not chaplain to the prisoners. My role was to the officers. And even though they were innocent of any crime, they were locked behind those bars every day also. On the other hand, the inmates remained behind. They could not just walk out. They were condemned to serve their sentence.

Paul continues the idea of the Law being restrictive and confining in today’s verse. In fact, he uses two words that point to that. He says “were kept in custody.” That’s the Greek word phrouréō which means “to actively display whatever defensive and offensive means are necessary to guard.” (HELPS Word Studies). The other word Paul uses is sugkleió which means to enclose or shut in. Paul is saying the Law held us captive until Jesus could be revealed.

APPLICATION

Well Carl, I’m not held captive by anything. I am free as a bird. Are you really? If you are in Jesus, you are free (as we discussed over the past few days), but even then, we can put ourselves back up under Law by thinking we have to do certain things to earn “brownie points” for heaven. There is nothing you can do, outside of surrendering to Jesus, that will get you through those pearly gates.

Acts 16:26 is a great picture of our salvation in Christ. Paul and Silas are sitting in prison for preaching about Jesus and then this happens. “and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains were unfastened.” That’s must be how it looks to God when we finally give our lives to Him. Bam! The chains fall off.

In stark contrast to our freedom in Christ, we see Satan, that ‘ole deceiver chained by God. Revelation 20:1-3 give us a great picture of that. “1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he took hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he threw him into the abyss and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time.” Praise be God, Who is the chain breaker and chain maker.

O Father, You have promised freedom for me and imprisonment for the devil. You are the all powerful Judge.

IMPRISONED

GALATIANS 3:22

“But the Scripture has confined everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.”

I have never been in jail or prison. I pray I never have to spend time there. You may have heard the joke that asks you to say the first four words you would say if you woke up in prison with your best friend. Mine would be “I told you no,” or “Don’t do that Bubba.” Anyway, no one wants to be in jail, but before Christ we all are, in a way.

In today’s verse, Paul uses a word translated as “concluded” that could also be translated as “imprisoned.” You see, we are all guilty under the Law, therefore we are all sentenced to an eternal prison, hell. But the last part of his verse gives us our “Get out of jail free card.” When we put our faith in Jesus, we receive all the promises from Him, including freedom from sin. It no longer has power over us. Praise be to God!

APPLICATION

Later in this letter to the Galatians, Paul says, “It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1). Don’t you think this whole idea of freedom in Christ was running through his mind as he penned these words in today’s verse? Paul knew the bondage that came with the demands of the Law. He couldn’t stand the idea of these new Gentile believers being shackled by them.

In John 8 Jesus addresses some Jewish believers. John 8:34-36 is a great discourse. “34 Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, truly I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 Now the slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.’” Can you imagine their relief, knowing they were set free from all the demands of the Law?

We too have been set free. 2 Corinthians 3:17 tell us, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” And where is that Spirit? He dwells in you! Therefore, you are free. You are free to live a life that honors the Lord Jesus. You are free to worship Him in spirit and in truth. You are free. Never put back on the chains of sin.

Thank You, Lord, for setting me free through Jesus. I praise You for the liberation I have in Him.

ONLY IF

GALATIANS 3:21

“Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? Far from it! For if a law had been given that was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law.”

There’s a saying, “Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.” You can get close and still have a point or cause an impact. But in everything else, you need to hit it right on the dot. It does no good to say, “If only I had scored more points” or “If only I had studied more.” Do you get my meaning?

In today’s verse, Paul is saying if only the law had been able to save us. He knew the limitations of the law because he had tried to live by it. He knew from first had experience the frailty of the Law. The Law did point to Christ, but only the ones who placed their faith in Jesus are able to see it.

APPLICATION

Most of us Gentiles have never been burdened in keeping the Law of Moses. We have never thought about eating kosher or following all the restrictions. Only when we come to Christ do we see how the Law points to Him. But we put ourselves under so many other Laws like going to church every time the doors are open or giving our tithe each week. I’ve even been told you can’t fish or hunt on Sunday.

No law is able to redeem us back into the relationship with Jesus that we need. I think of Matthew 11:28-30. “28‘Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30  For My yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light.’” The yoke of Jesus is not burdensome. Why? Because He is yoked along with us. He shows us how to live holy.

So, how will you live today – under Law or under grace? What does living under grace mean to you? You need to live each day as if He is going to appear any moment. Live to please the Master. Live to honor Him in everything you do. Will you do that?

Lord God, You gave us the Law to point toward Jesus. Thank You for His saving grace.

PURCHASED

GALATIANS 3:13

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written: ‘CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE’—”

Over 150 years ago here in the U.S., slavery was a part of the economic system. Slaves were purchased off the slave block as they arrived on ships. Most of these slaves came from Africa, but not all. Where they came from was not important. Where they were now was. The horrors of slavery have been told over and over. We should never forget it. The freedom for those slaves was purchased by acts of brave men who saw it as evil. These abolitionists even bought slaves in order to free them.

The word used in today’s verse for “redeemed” is exagorazó. It is not the usual word used for “redeem.” It is more general in nature. Albert Barnes explains the word this way. “It occurs in the New Testament only in this place, and in Galatians 4:5, Ephesians 5:16 and Colossians 4:5. It properly means, to purchase, to buy up; and then to purchase anyone, to redeem, to set free. Here it means, that Christ had purchased, or set us free from the curse of the Law, by his being made a curse for us.” One man for many!

APPLICATION

You and I do not have to do that today. We do not purchase people out of slavery. But we do have the privilege to show them a Savior who can set them free from all their sins. Acts 1:8 still has application for us today. “‘But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.’” Do you believe that? I do.

How about 1 Peter 3:15? “But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,” You see, we still have a mandate from God to help execute this “purchase.” He is still using people like us to provide this ransom for their souls.

Will you commit to being part of this team? God wants to use us to see lost souls come to Jesus. Yes, God could part the skies and proclaim, “Repent now in Jesus’ name.” He could send every single person on earth a personal message. He can do anything. But He has chosen to use us in these last days to deliver the message. Let’s do this!

I am thankful You purchased me off the slave block of sin where I was doomed to an evil master.

ABSOLUTELY NOT

GALATIANS 3:12

“However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, ‘THE PERSON WHO PERFORMS THEM WILL LIVE BY THEM.’”

Do you remember those times as a child or teen when you asked your parents permission to do something and the answer you got was “Absolutely Not!”? What did that mean? What right did they have to say that to you? What harm could it do to jump off the roof into a pile of leaves you had raked up? Right? Come on, mom and dad. Give me some room to explore life.

Paul uses a little Greek word for “not” here that has a stronger meaning than the English implies. Ouk is stronger than me, which is another Greek word for “not.” Don’t let me lose you here. Paul, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, used ouk because he wanted to show that there was absolutely no way the Law could produce faith. He quotes Leviticus 18:5, which would have been familiar to his audience. This was God speaking to Moses right before He gave him some of the laws He expected them to follow.

APPLICATION

Following laws may seem easy, but it’s not. For instance, how many of you follow the law of driving the speed limit? The law is clear. It’s posted on road signs, for goodness to sake. In case you forget what the speed limit is, it’s going to show up again down the road. But as hard as you try, you will never keep that law exactly. The second you go over it, you have broken the law. You may not see immediate consequences, but you have broken the law.

Paul is trying to show the Galatians the futility of trying to keep the Law. In the same way, the second you break one of the commands listed in the Law, you have become guilty of breaking the whole Law. You may not see the consequences immediately, but they are coming one day.

In contrast, faith in Jesus removes all the consequences of our failures. When we come to Him and confess our sins and accept Him as Lord and Savior, we are freed from any and all consequences of sin. We are made righteous in His eyes. Paul says it another way over in Romans 8:1, “Therefore there is now no condemnation at all for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Now, that is shouting ground, people! Give God praise!

When I could not fulfill the requirements of the Law, You gave me Jesus Who could and did fulfill it all and gave me life.

DEAD TO IT

GALATIANS 2:19

“For through the Law I died to the Law, so that I might live for God.”

What freedom we have when we finally get victory over something that has controlled us! Amen? It wasn’t until I understood the freedom that I have in Christ that I was able to escape the self-imposed shackles of religion. I believed I had to do certain things to gain God’s love. I thought I had to also not do other things.

Paul was very aware of this mindset. His training as a Pharisee had taught him to follow the Law. But now he understands that the Law could never lead him to righteousness. Ellicott’s Commentary for English Readers says this about this verse, “The road to freedom from the Law lay through the Law.” Paul wanted to make sure Peter and the other Jewish believers in Antioch was reminded of that freedom.

APPLICATION

You can’t say it much simpler than Jesus did in John 8:36. “‘So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.’” Jesus is saying this in the midst of a conversation with the religious leaders. They equated freedom with release from enslavement. They did not even realize they were enslaved to their laws and guidelines. They did not understand the freedom Jesus was referring to.

In 2 Corinthians 3:17 we read, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” That is the key to our freedom. We have the Spirit of the Lord dwelling within us as believers. The Spirit reminds us of this freedom day after day. He tells us we do not have to be tied to the Law or man-made guidelines anymore.

I am so thankful for my freedom in Christ. I am thankful I am dead to all those old ideas I had about what it meant to be spiritual. Living dead to them and alive to Christ makes everyday a day worth living. It brings new excitement, not drudgery. Isn’t that how you want to live?

Father, I thank You for my freedom I have in Jesus and for the life I can live through Him.

YOU CAN’T GO BACK

GALATIANS 2:18

“For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove myself to be a wrongdoer.”

Millions of people make the fatal mistake of returning to past sins or past ways of living. For example, meth addicts are extremely precluded to do this. They can be in jail for a year, clean from the use of this substance, and the very day they get released they return to it. It’s like a magnet drawing them. Sadly, there are many who also come to Christ but get drawn back into old habits or sins.

In today’s verse, Paul is still addressing Peter and the Jewish believers who are there in Antioch. He is saying that once they had come to Christ, the Law no longer held any sway over them. The sacrifices were no longer required. Circumcision was no longer needed. Kosher eating had been abolished. They were free in Christ. But they were returning or still trying to observe these guidelines in the Law. Paul said that would make them a “wrongdoer.”

APPLICATION

In Romans 14, Paul addresses at length this issue of our freedom in Christ. Take a minute or two and read that whole chapter. But let me share a couple of verses as an example. Verse 2-3 say, “2 One person has faith that he may eat all things, but the one who is weak eats only vegetables. 3 The one who eats is not to regard with contempt the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat is not to judge the one who eats, for God has accepted him.”

I have a responsibility to myself and to others to be true to Christ, not some man-made, imposed tradition or rule. I only answer to Jesus. 2 Corinthians 5:17 comes to mind. Do you know that verse? You should. It says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

Oh, the freedom we have in Christ. I live each day to please Him. I know if I am pleasing my Master, He will take care of the rest. Others may not like my freedom in Christ. That’s okay. He does. That’s all that matters. Are you free? Have you laid down all those old laws that bound you? Or have you returned to them, thinking that by doing them you are pleasing Him? Lay them down. Live in Him.

Thank You, Lord, for freeing me from the shackles of sin and the Law.
