THE TAILOR

EPHESIANS 4:24

“and to put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.”

A couple of years ago, while I was in Kenya teaching at a Pastors’ conference, I was given the opportunity to go to a local clothes manufacturer and have a tailored African suit made for me. We went into the office where a tailor took my measurements. He measured my chest, waist (which was and still is too big, lol), arms and inseam. Within a few days, I was presented with a beautiful African suit which I wear proudly.

Paul describes God’s tailoring efforts on us in today’s verse. He says our “new self” has been tailored “in the likeness of God.” Actually, the Greek just reads “according to God.” The idea Paul is trying to get across is it is God who has given us this new self which “has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.” This new self is given to us by God so that we can walk righteously and holy, just like He is.

APPLICATION

2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” The same Greek word for “new” is used here as in today’s verse. It means to be qualitatively new, to be fresh. I have to tell you – the African suit I have is definitely fresh, lol. I did not have another suit like that.

The same word is used to describe the new wineskins in Mark 2:22. Listen, it’s this simple. Jesus makes all things new when He comes into your life. In referring to this “new self,” Albert Barnes says this, “The change is so great, that there is no impropriety in speaking of one who has experienced it as ‘a new man.’ He has new feelings, principles, and desires. He has laid aside his old principles and practices, and, in everything that pertains to moral character, he is new.”

Is that you? Can others describe you as “new.” If you have ever seen someone who has been truly renewed spiritually, you know exactly what I am talking about. They are the same outwardly, but inwardly they are a new person. Only Christ can do that. He will continually renew us day by day until that glorious day when we see Him face to face and are changed into a perfect, glorified spirit to live with Him forever. Halleljuah!

WEARING JESUS

GALATIANS 3:27

“For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”

Wearing the right clothes for the right occasion is important. For instance, you wouldn’t wear a baseball uniform to play football. You wouldn’t put on our tights and ballerina shoes to run a marathon. We have clothes for all kinds of things, don’t we? Some are expensive and some are just our “knock around” clothes. (I keep telling my wife those old shirts are necessary, lol.)

Paul reminds us that as believers we have another garment. We have been “clothed…with Christ.” What does that mean? We wrap ourselves with His sentiments, His passion, His love. We clothe ourselves with Him so that when people look at us, they see Him, not us. Paul may have been thinking also about the white robes believers often wore at baptism. Wearing those robes must have made those early believers connect to the idea of a totally different life now in Jesus.

APPLICATION

New clothes can make a man. 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us. “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” Over in Colossians 3:9-10, Paul gives us another picture of taking off the old and putting on the new. “9 Do not lie to one another, since you stripped off the old self with its evil practices, 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created it—”

What are you wearing today? Are you wearing Jesus? Or are you still pulling on those old ugly dungarees stained with self? They may feel comfy, but they come with a lot of baggage. Do as Paul said and put on the new self. That new self is only possible as we throw away the old stuff. Get rid of it. I know it’s hard to do but do it. You’ll be glad you did.

Back to today’s verse – “clothe yourselves with Christ.” I worked with a fellow pastor who was described by the middle schoolers he worked with as “Jesus with skin on.” They meant he lived like Jesus. Is that not the goal of each of us? So, change your clothes today if you are not wearing Jesus.

Lord, I am so thankful that I have been given a new garment.

NO MORE DISGUISES

ZECHARIAH 13:4

“‘Also it will come about on that day that the prophets will each be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies, and they will not put on a hairy robe in order to deceive;’”

People are so good at wearing disguises when it comes to their walk with Christ. We wear masks that show us smiling, when inside we are crying. We tell everyone we are fine, but really we are beaten down and low. Why do we do that? Why can’t we be real to each other? God sees right through these disguises. You can’t hide your true feelings from Him.

The prophets who had confessed their sin of falsehoods would be repentant, according to the Lord here in verse 4. They would not wear the traditional rough, hairy robe as a sign of humility. They had done that far too many times falsely. They wore that in the past to deceive the people. They had really been proud and arrogant, claiming to speak for God, when He had not spoken.

APPLICATION

I am reminded of Jesus saying in John 8:31-32, “‘31…If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” Jesus did not expect us to hide our true feelings. There was no need to pretend with Him. Because He is the Truth, He expects us to live in the Truth. That means not wearing those disguises.

We do not need to pretend to be something we are not. But living this way makes you vulnerable. I know that is a risk. Revealing your true self can be risky. Do you trust the Lord? Do you think He wants you living in a way that is not true? I love what Peter says in 1 Peter 5:5. “…and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another,…”

Ah, there’s the risky part – being humble. See, those prophets the Lord was referring to in today’s verse were anything but humble when they were prophesying falsely and wearing that false robe of humility. Don’t go around wearing that either. But clothe yourself with true humility. Trust the Lord with your feelings. He can handle them.

O Lord, it is hard to let our guard down. Give us boldness to do so.

LET’S GET DRESSED UP

ZECHARIAH 3:4

And he responded and said to those who were standing before him, saying, ‘Remove the filthy garments from him.’ Again he said to him, ‘See, I have taken your guilt away from you and will clothe you with festive robes.’”

Today, in most churches, you don’t see many people dressed up. Men rarely, if ever, wear a suit and tie. Women don’t wear dresses or hats. When I was young, those were common sights. I don’t mind wearing a suit and tie. In fact, I kind of like it. Now, God doesn’t require that, I know. But I kind of feel nice when I dress nicer for church than when I go to a ballgame. That’s just me.

We find Joshua, the high priest, clothed in filthy garments (see yesterday’s blog) in Zechariah’s vision. But the Lord does not leave him like that. He gives instructions to the angels to remove those filthy things and to clothe him in festive robes. These were probably the high priest’s garments. This action represented God’s forgiveness of the people of Israel. They were now cleansed of those sins represented by the other garments.

APPLICATION

The good news for us is God does the same for us. Take me, for instance. I was a filthy dog. Really, I was. My life before Christ was filled with debauchery. I wasn’t fit for my King. But because I placed my trust in Christ, He removed my filthy garments and clothed me in His righteousness. Now, I am wearing His garment of praise. Isaiah 61:3 says, “…to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” Don’t you want that? Barnes says this about today’s verse. “But when God had pity on them, He bade them be freed from their defilements, and in a manner re-clad with justifying grace.”

Oh, friends, He does the same for you. He will free you from your defilements. He will clothe you with His grace. All you have to do is come to Him. Are you still trying to pick up those old, filthy garments? Has the devil got you believing you are not worthy of His garments? You are! God says you are. Don’t believe those lies of Satan.

I have known a lot of Christians who wallow in their own filth. They have asked Christ to be their Savior, but they just can’t believe it is that simple. Well, it is, and it isn’t. Salvation is free but is not cheap. A surrendered life will cost you everything. In return, He gives you His kingdom as a joint heir with Christ. Just look at Romans 8:16-17. “16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.” Now, live like it.

I don’t deserve Your garments, Lord, but You have clothed me.
