LOOK AT ME!

PHILIPPIANS 3:5

“circumcised the eighth day, of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee;”

Have you ever known someone who had to be the center of attention? They wanted everyone to watch them. They wanted everyone to give them praise. My ten-month-old grandson wants his Nana’s and my attention if we are both in the same room. For instance, if she is reading him a book and I am in the room, he will make sure I am watching him by making this little sound that means, “Hey, look at me.” No one taught him that. It’s just part of his little nature.

If you took this verse (and the next one) out of context, you would think Paul was bragging on himself. What he is doing is showing the Philippians if anyone had a reason to brag on their earthly pedigree, he did. Paul knows none of these things really mean much. His true pedigree is in Christ. But let’s take a look at some of these things Paul mentions here.

APPLICATION

Being “circumcised the eighth day” meant his parents had followed the law perfectly. This was the requirement (Genesis 17:12). He belonged to “the nation of Israel.” He was able to trace his lineage back as far as anyone. (I have traced my lineage back to 1555 in England. I think that’s pretty cool.) He is also “of the tribe of Benjamin.” In other words, his tribe has always been loyal to Israel, remaining with Judah when the nation split. Then Paul says he is “a Hebrew of Hebrews” which meant he was a pure Jew by blood. Finally, he says he was “a Pharisee.” He had kept the law exactly.

All of Paul’s accomplishments mentioned above would not get him into heaven. He knew that. He is laying out his argument much like a lawyer would. Don’t you love watching crime shows where the lawyer finally nails the bad guy with the evidence of their crime? Paul is laying out all the reasons why he should be declared righteous. We’ll see more of these tomorrow.

In verse 7 he will nail the coffin shut on all his achievements. We should do the same. Nothing we do will ever give us a heavenly home. Only Jesus’ shed blood on Calvary can open the doors to heaven for us once we accept Him as our Savior and Lord. Don’t stand up and say, “Look at me!” Instead, point to Jesus.

Lord God, I have no way of entering glory except through Jesus. Thank You for the assurance of my salvation.

YOU CAN’T MOCK GOD

GALATIANS 6:7

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a person sows, this he will also reap.”

To mock someone isn’t very nice. Have you ever been mocked? Do you even know what I mean by that? To mock someone is to turn your nose up or sneer at them. In other words, you show how you feel about them – not very much. It’s meant to try to hurt that person. When you mock someone, you almost always do it so they are aware of it. You want them to see you do this in order to inflict as much pain as possible.

Well, that just won’t work with God, according to Paul in today’s verse. He says, “God is not mocked;…” The Greek word used here is only used right here in the New Testament. The word comes from the Greek word for nostril. So, you can see the symbolism. But look at why Paul says God will not be mocked. A man will reap what he sows. Let’s look at that.

APPLICATION

You may have heard it said that a lot of folks are quick to sow their wild oats and then they pray for a crop failure. Well, you can’t fool God. He knows what you’re up to. You are only deceiving yourself. You can’t pretend to be a Christian and keep one foot in the world. God knows. You can’t say you love your brother and try to take advantage. God knows.

The Greek word for “deceive” means to wander or be misled. It’s in the Present tense which means you are constantly doing it. It’s a command – don’t do this. And it’s in the middle voice which means you are misleading yourself. Did I lose you. Paul is saying to the Galatians, “Don’t let yourself wander from the truth.” This applies to us today just as much. We are prone to wander just as easily.

Do you want to live in truth? Do you want to live with nothing to hide? Then submit to God. Do not attempt to hide stuff from Him. You may turn your nose up for a while, thinking you’ve got this handled. But it will come crashing in sooner or later. Do not be deceived! God will not be mocked!

O Lord, I want to live for You and show the world I am Your child

UPSIDE DOWN

MALACHI 3:15

“‘“So now we call the arrogant blessed; not only are the doers of wickedness built up, but they also put God to the test and escape punishment.”’”

There is an amusement attraction in Pigeon Forge, TN which is an upside down house. Everything inside that house is upside down. And people pay money to go inside. Now, that really doesn’t make any sense, lol. Life seems upside down at times, doesn’t it? Nothing makes sense. Everything is contrary to how things should be.

The murmuring people of Israel were claiming these falsehoods in verse 15. The arrogant were being called blessed. The doers of wickedness are built up, testing God and escaping punishment. The sad thing was they were saying these things to excuse their own bad behavior. If the world was so bad, nothing they did mattered. Sound familiar?

APPLICATION

Proverbs 21:24 says it well. “‘Proud,’ ‘Haughty,’ ‘Scoffer,’ are his names, who acts with insolent pride.” All around us today we see the same thing going on. Sometimes we may say to ourselves, “How can these wicked people get by with all this stuff they are doing?” It’s hard to imagine God tolerating them.

We see that explained in Isaiah 55:8-9. “8 ‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,’ declares the LORD. 9 ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.’” We will never understand the mind of God, therefore we will never understand why He allows the wicked to continue.

The real question is more personal. What are you doing that displeases Him? How are you living out your faith? What are you representing today for Christ? We are not responsible for the behavior of others, only ourselves. So, stop pointing your fingers at them and look inward. Check out yourself. Let others look at you in amazement as you live for Jesus.

I know I can only be held accountable for myself, Lord. Help me reflect Your glory.

ARROGANT WORDS

MALACHI 3:13

“‘Your words have been arrogant against Me,’ says the LORD. ‘Yet you say, “What have we spoken against You?”’”

When I first met my wife, we were both working at a children’s home in Georgia. She was the Recreation Director, and I was a Houseparent for teenage boys. I’ll never forget that she thought I was arrogant and full of myself. I don’t know – maybe I was. I have learned since then not to question her judgment. Anyway, I guess I won her over since we have been married over 38 years now.

Arrogance is what the Lord accuses the people of. They had criticized the Lord and were not even aware. We have to look back at Malachi 2:17 where this was addressed the first time. “You have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet you say, ‘How have we wearied Him?’ In that you say, ‘Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and He delights in them,’ or, ‘Where is the God of justice?’” Conceit and self-righteousness are both forms of arrogance they practiced.

APPLICATION

Before you start pointing fingers at them, check out your own heart. Do you have any arrogance in there, any conceit or self-righteousness? We all have that from time to time. We can get cocky and snobbish toward other people, even our family members. God does not look kindly on this behavior.

Paul shared with Timothy some traits that will exhibited in the last days. Man, we are seeing these today, aren’t we? 2 Timothy 3:1-5 tells us, “1 But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, slanderers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, 4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 holding to a form of  godliness although they have denied its power; avoid such people as these.”

I underlined several traits that are linked directly to arrogance. Let me ask you to check out yourself against this list. How many are you portraying daily? How many do you need to confess as sin right now? Take the time to do a self-check. Make sure you are following the Lord and not self. Then get back to loving Him and loving others. After all, isn’t that what Jesus said to do?

Father, forgive my arrogant heart and cleanse me from all self-righteousness.
