1 Chronicles 9:27 “They spent the night around the house of God, because the watch was committed to them; and they were in charge of opening it morning by morning.”
COMMITTED
When I read this verse my first thought was, “How boring!” I mean, come on, every day their job was to open the doors of the temple. That’s it! I immediately had the image of the guys you see at the door of a fancy hotel opening the door for people.
They were so committed to this role that they would sleep near the temple every night so they could be close to their job. They took their job seriously. It may not have seemed important to others, but it was to them. I bet they kept the doors polished and shining. I bet there was no trash lying around the doors.
TEACHING MOMENT
Our children need to learn there is no task too small in the service of the King of kings. Whatever He asks you to do, you need to do it. If He is asking it is important. We should show them this by how we treat His requests on our lives. Whether we are “opening the doors to the temple” or sweeping up after a church event, our children need to see us modeling a servant attitude.
Why not get your kids in on the action? The next time you are asked to do something at church take them along. Let them have a part in it. Children love to serve, especially when they can see the “finished product.” And when they assist you, brag on them to others. Let them know that you are proud of them.
How low will you go in service? Will you do anything to serve the Lord? Or do you demand the spotlight jobs that everyone can see?
ust recently I arrived at church for a Sunday morning service in which I was preaching. When I walked into church I noticed some dead leaves all over the floor at the front of the sanctuary. I immediately heard the Lord say, “Get the broom and dustpan and sweep those up.” I thought, “I’m preaching today. Why should I do that?” But I did it. No one knew I did it. That didn’t matter. I just did it.
