2 Samuel 23:17d “These things the three mighty men did.”
HOW WILL YOU BE REMEMBERED
“Here I come to save the day! That means that Mighty Mouse is on the way! Yes sir, when there is a wrong to right, Mighty Mouse will join the fight!”
I am really dating myself. Those words above are part of the Mighty Mouse theme song, which was a popular cartoon figure in the 1950’s and 60’s. I loved Mighty Mouse. He would fly (yes, a flying mouse) and save the day. He never ran from a fight to uphold justice.
Don’t ask me why, but I thought of Mighty Mouse when I read these verses today in 2 Samuel about the mighty men of David. Some of their exploits are recorded, but I bet they had many more stories. I can’t wait to ask them about those one day. They will be remembered for their valor, courage and loyalty to God and David.
TEACHING MOMENT
Kids love hero stories. Well the stories of the mighty men make good reading then. But it’s not just about what they did. It’s more about why they did it. They loved David, their king. They loved the Lord for whom they fought. They loved their nation and were willing to die for it. Aren’t those character traits you want to see in your children?
And just like most traits they learn, they look for them in us. Are we sold out to Jesus to the point that we would die for Him? Are we loyal to our country where we live? Will we defend our families against, not only physical threats, but spiritual threats? I don’t expect you to be “Rambos” and take on the world. But I do want you to have the courage to do whatever the Lord tells you.
